    Greetings and Headlight Help Needed

I'm a recently retired, long-time mid-year owner who is grateful for the help and fellowship provided by NCRS. I finally have the time to get back to work on my '65 covertible (a very pretty driver) and thought my first post to this site might help me with a headlight problem.

My left headlight refuses to open properly. The motor is running when I activate the switch, but without me physically pushing the headlight down at the rear, it will not engage and fully open the assembly. The assembly closes without any physical assistance, although it stops approximately a quarter of an inch short of full closure. The right assembly works perfectly and there is no play in the closed position, where the right assembly does have play in it when closed.

Any thoughts on what could be wrong and how I might approach finding a solution?

This is a common problem of the mid years. You have to remove the headlight motor. They are held in place by a small 1/4" hex nut and a clip. Once you have the motor out open it up and look at the aluminum gear inside. It probably shows some wear. In addition you will probably notice the old grease in the housing is like cement. Clean up the housing and use some lithium grease. Take the aluminum gear and rotate it 180 degrees and reinstall. The gear only wears in one spot. Now you should be good for another 43 years or so.
To remove the headlight motor you have to open the hood and install a safety pin. Don't want the hood to drop with your hands in there. Use a mirror to work on the motor. I wrap the motor with an old rag and carefully lift it out at the hood opening. Take your time working upside down with a mirror is not easy.
You can check the archives for additional information it has been discussed before. Usually the other motor is not far behind in needing the same service.
