I've just always been curious why this name was chosen over, say, "level", or "class"? "Flight" seems a bit of an unusual choice to me.

Re: Why The Name "Flight" For Judging and Awards?
Hello All,
I looked back at the early issues of The RESTORER to try to find the history of 'Flight'.
In Volume Two, Number Four, Spring 1976, John Amgwert wrote a column about 'NCRS Judging Changes'. He wrote that the NCRS Directors voted to implement new award classifications: 'Top Flight', 'Second Flight', and 'Third Flight'. With a 'Best of Show' trophy going to the car with the highest score. Cars would be judged against a '100 point car'. He wrote, "The new system of awarding ribbons will give more cars a chance for recognition and a better incentive to bring one's car".
Previously up to 3 ribbons maximum could be awarded to a 'Division', ie 53-55, 56-57, 58-60, 61-62, in what was a 'Concours' type judging.
There was no hint about the choice of the 'Flight" designation. I'll search further to see if it's talked about in later issues.

Re: Why The Name "Flight" For Judging and Awards?
A "flight" is a (usually informal) designation for a formation of military aircraft less than a squadron, and some USAF tactical squadrons subdivide into "flights" for organizational purposes, and the "flights" may be graded on relative performance, so there is a "top (or first) flight", "second flight", etc. within the squadron and competiton is intense!
Maybe there's a connection.
