Re: Vin Tag
The DMV in your state of registration will be happy to explain all the rules. They may frown heavily on private parties supplying replacement VIN plates and may offer storage of your vehicle until such time as you see it their way.
Repo trim tags is a different topic not to be confused with VIN tags.- Top

Re: Vin Tag
There are pro/con issues here to consider...
First, you CAN find sources for reproduction VIN tags. BUT, if judges inspect the car and determine the VIN tag is NOT factory original, NCRS will not Flight Judge the car! That will wind up casting doubt as to the car's authenticity...
BUT, every State has a program to issue 'replacement' VIN tags (covers scrap yard recovered vehicles + home built cars and trucks). At NCRS, we fully comprehend this and do NOT discriminate against these vehicles! It's a matter of the car having a LEGITIMATE VIN tag affixed to it by an officially recognized authority. Both the car's original manufacturer as well as the State of registration are such authorities....- Top

Re: Vin Tag
Thought I answered that... Yep, I'll admit I paraphrased from the NCRS rule book, but you can crack open your copy of the NCRS Judging Reference manual and read the precise text. Turn to Section 2, Rule 1 (Model Years Judged, Membership & Vehicle Identification)...
NCRS requires cars that are presented for Flight Judging be represented by an NCRS owner, in good standing, with proof of ownership, proper insurance and an "attached, Chevrolet factory Vehicle Identification Number plate, or attached valid state-approved replacement ID plate which matches title and/or registration."
We don't care about factory originality of the VIN tag. It's not a judged item. It's only looked at by the Team Leader and/or Meet Judging Chairman for the purpose of validating vehicle ownership. Now, if a given car has a state-issued identification tag, then the Flight Judging Certificate that's issued at the meet (if any) will bear THAT identification number vs. the car's factory original number.
No big deal. Our club motto/objective is the restoration and preservation of classic Corvettes. Why would we want to penalize a car whose owner recovered it from, say, scrap yard components?
Heck, it's not the CAR'S fault it had a 'rough' life. Why penalize the vehicle for the act(s) of prior owners? Gosh, any other policy and we'd be encouraging the CRUSHING of all those 'bad' Corvettes out there that managed to somehow lose their VIN tags! That's inconsistent with the philosophy of restoration/preservation...Last edited by Jack H.; August 7, 2008, 01:40 PM.- Top

Re: Vin Tag
Yes, But now in Okla. and few other states (that are reviewing it). I heard it's becomming illegal to obtain and affix Repo Trim Tags. Most notably on 1st generation Camaros etc. An effort to stop the cars that magically morph into X33-X77 Z's w/ colors of Black on Red Trim etc. Or other highly desirable SS 396's, Mopars etc. Remains to be seen if it holds up.- Top
