Headlight actuator part number - C3

I took apart my headlights today to replace the actuator seal and dust boots. I don't see a part number anywhere so I was wondering if there is a way to tell if the actuators are the originals. I have a '73.

Also, is it possible to remove some of the rust without replating?

    Thanks in advance, Chris

The 1973 actuators were GM #5638541, left side, and 5638542, right side. However, as you've found, there are no part numbers to be found on these units. These same part number actuators are still available in SERVICE from GM. However, there may be nuance differences between current examples and originals.

Given the condition of your actuators, I'd say it's likely that they're originals. Removing the rust is not too difficult. However, they will need to be re-plated. No doubt about that, at all. I think you'll find that by the time "all-is-said-and-done", the cost of re-plating and everything else you'll need will be more than just purchasing new actuators. You might find that they're identical or near identical to the originals, anyway.

      Thanks for the info Joe,

I believe I saw an ad in Driveline for a rebuild/replate service for around $100, which is cheaper than buying GM originals. Maybe that's the way I'll go.

If you are planning on judging only your originals replated correctly will get all the points. Their are reproductions for under $100. each and they are close in configeration but a good judge will sniff them out.
