I have a 1966 427 390 hp car. It was built in late October 1965. VIN 3561. The tranny has P1015 on passenger side and the car's vin on opposite side. The vin has a 6 then space and then the rest of the vin. Some pictures I have seen of other trannys show a letter s also on the tranny after the year just as the title or registration shows. Also the top of the letters are towards the rear of the tranny. Is this correct or has someone done something here? I am restoring the car and want it correct. Thank you for your help, Ron.

Ron -- here's a pic that should answer some of your questions. I've seen the VIN derivative facing both ways.
This particular one is P0211 assembly, with 685 sidecover and 584 tail.
About the VIN deriv: '63-64 were 3 (or 4)107055 (example); early '65 started out the same, but after a few months went to S107055 (no '5' prefix, but 'S' added). Then, in '66, they used format shown in the pic. However, took assy line workers time to get-it-right on early cars, which maybe explains the lack of 'S' in your case.Attached Files- Top

Thanks for the info. I attached a picture of my tranny with vin. I used a black marker to help show the numbers (hopefully my upload works). I am going to have it gone through. Everything worked ok but I don't want to pull it back out of the car after it is put back together. Building a corvette is definitely a different experience than building a streetrod.
