    GE257 Lightbulbs

I think my parking break light on my 1965 is supposed to blink. It doesn't do anything. The headlight indicator blinks, and that has a 257 bulb. Does anyone have any experience with these? I broke the bulb trying it in the parking light socket. Now I think I'll need two new bulbs. Autoparts store or catalog??? Any help would be appreciated.

    Jim,

The brake warning light should have a built-in flasher. Unfortunately, the GE bulbs are no longer available. You can get overseas replacements from any of the vendors, but usually in a kit. If you just want the 257 bulb, Lectric Limited will sell just the bulb and you won't have to buy the entire interior bulb kit.

Try NAPA. You may need to buy a box but they aren't that expensive and then you'll have a lifetime supply.

The China made bulbs do not flash correctly according to NCRS standards. The GE and Westinghouse 257 bulbs are available from time to time on ebay. Search there first.
If no luck send me an email. I think I have a few spares at home.

          Cheers,
          Craig

            Craig,
If you have an extra one, I sure could use it.

            Thanks,

              Re: GE257 Lightbulbs

Steven, I wish I knew about it the other day. I will be home this weekend and in and out next week. Do you want one of the aftermaket types or a GE or Westinghouse type? I think I paid about $10 for the GE and Westinghose ones. They are original 60's bulbs and will flash correctly. Just let me know.

              Cheers,
              Craig

I've had my 67 judged 3 times at regionals and have had no complaints concerning the bulb flash rate...
What are the NCRS "standards"....? The judging manual does not address flash rate.

I believe the flash rate can be affected by the bulb characteristics, battery voltage level, and circuitry condition (Resistance/corrosion of connections etc) so on a fresh restoration the flash rate could be faster than an original system using the same bulb.

Be careful using the China bulbs as they may not seat in the socket well.

Just to see the difference, I tested 2 replacement Taiwan 257 bulbs, flashed very slow. Tested 2 GE 257's, they are noticeably faster than the vendor replacement ones. twice as fast at least. Both tested on a out of car battery fully charged, etc.

I agree on the slow flash rate of the bulbs from China. The ones I have flash very slow, so I am going to have to find some good ol' American made bulbs!

Jorjorian recently told me that since the early 90's most of our automotive bulbs are foreign made. The 257's imports are readily available at most any parts store. You will probably have to order them. Car Quest will sell you just two. But they don't hold a candle to a real deal GE or Westinghouse 257. All of those kit bulbs are available locally. Real deal though are tough to find. Pound the flea market trail for them.
Recently I thought I hit paydirt at my local NAPA on our bulbs. The parts man said he had a lot of old boxes of bulbs made by Wagner. Yeah rite. Reboxed imports.
For example try finding the correct #90 courtesy lite bulbs that have the very small grape shape to them. You can get foreign ones with a larger globe.
The 1034's are drying up too. Good luck, JD
