going over my judging sheets for my early 63, i received a deduction for spare tire housing (tub) "wrong mounting bolts, nice tub". what are the correct bolts used? mine are the recessed, 1/2" l/g head. was i robbed? or do i have the wrong bolts? thnx for your comments, pappy.

Re: spare tire tub mounting bolts
Pappy, I got a similar deduct and after thinking about it the judges were correct. Not that I disputed them in the first place but here is the scoop. Years ago when the repro knock offs first came out I bought a set of 5 for my 63. So I had different bolts for the knockoffs and never switched back to the correct ones. Maybe your tube studs are knockoff studs.? John- Top

Re: spare tire tub mounting bolts
mike & john, the bolts(screws) only mount the tub to the fuel tank support and the rear frame cross member. they're the short 1/2" fine thread. not the long bolts for the tray. the "l/g" is from the paragon catalog. thnx,again.pappy- Top

Mike, Thanx for the clarification. I was thinking of the long bolts. John- Top

Re: spare tire tub mounting bolts
Yo Pappy,
Since these things were rolling R & D projects and changed daily, if not hourly, when anyone mentions "Early '63", this strikes fear in the hearts of men and instills the facial expression of a deer in the headlights. This may account for you minimal response.
Having said that, I can say that every original production tub fastener application I have seen, used the 1/2" recessed head bolt that you described, but, a black oxide finish with a larger flat washer and an "E" head marking, same as those used for the seat tracks in Mid-Years.
Looks like the Judges may have actually made the right call.
Hope this helps.

Re: spare tire tub mounting bolts
Pappy, Are the bolts fine thread or course thread??? Notice the nice photo Wayne put on has course thread. I have no clue what my 63 car has though. It's tucked away for awhile as Carlisle is around the corner. JD- Top

Re: spare tire tub mounting bolts
mike.curt, wayne and john, thnx for all your responses. 'checkd the aim. it specifies screw, p/n 171110. 'not sure about seat tracks on other midyears, but it is used on 63 parking brake cables to secure cables to frame. i also believe the screw is a recessed head with "e" mark. thnx,pappy- Top

Re: spare tire tub mounting bolts
Wayne, It's my old eyes as the previous photo looked like course thread. Strain thing about those bolts is not all of them had logos. There were some that were plain. Don't know if the manual covers this as I never looked. Take care and thanks very much, John- Top

Re: spare tire tub mounting bolts
The bolts that came with my 63 are exactly like Wayne's pic but don't have any marking on the heads. I installed rivnuts so I could use them..- Top

Re: spare tire tub mounting bolts
Here's what was on a Mar64 car, got point hit for silver color, but that's what they were! Now I removed the tub in the early 70's, bagged all parts, stored in attic until 2004. Notice no head markings either.
Unable to find the 171110 bolt or 3748358 washer in the limited Gr 8 stuff I have perhaps somebody can post those.Attached Files- Top
