    1969 TJ-2 Louver Trim Attachment

A question came up recently regarding the attaching parts for the 1969 TJ-2 louver trim. I've never really studied TJ-2, to say the least, so I didn't have an answer. But, I checked this out today when I went over to look at the wheel trim rings on a friend's original owner 1969 which has factory-installed TJ-2 trim.

The louver trim are attached via screws and well nuts. The screws were originally GM #3962676. This was a PRODUCTION-only part number; it was never available in SERVICE.

The nuts were a special well nut of GM #3945656. These were discontinued in December, 1985 but were replaced by GM #3876130, a very similar well nut previously used for attachment of the voltage regulator to the inner fender of 65-68 Corvettes. These nuts are still available from GM.

The GM #3962676 screws were a #10-24 machine screw. They were a countersunk-type, flat head phillips. They were 13/16" thread length and 15/16" overall length. They were zinc plated and the head diameter was 0.315". The only "special" feature was that the face of the head was coated with a "silverish" paint or coating, very similar to the color of the surfaces of the louvers through which the screws pass.

The screws, themselves, are very common. I purchased some in a hardware store that are virtually identical in every way. The only differences are a slight difference in length (easily trimmed if desired) and a head diameter of 0.350" (easily trimmed to 0.315", if desired).

Photos of the original screws and the hardware store screw are shown below:

I accidentally came upon screws that are very close to the originals for the TJ2 option.
Corvette Central offers product number 342225, titled "Steering Wheel Mounting Screws", at $3.95/6 screws.
These screws are #10 x 24 x 5/8", and are 3/4" in total length. The head of the screw is 0.350" as described in the post above, but can be reduced in size to the original 0.315, as Joe said.
I inserted one of the screws into a TJ2 side "gill", and it is VERY close to the original. The head size does look, ever so slightly, larger than the original.
They are easy to order online at Corvette Central.

Joe Lucia, can you tell me what to do to reduce the size of the screw head from 0.350 to 0.315? I don't know how, and have never attempted anything like that. Thanks much.

The well nuts are available from Auveco (Google the company) #16237. Fastenal carries the Auveco line as do most other fastener supply houses. I used to buy them in boxes of 25 and resold them as the trim inserts and also for mounting of TI boxes and I believe mid year voltage regulators. Screws used in various locations had different head design

          Dick,
I posted about the screws, not the well nuts.
          Auveco #16237 is a well nut, #8-32, .4199 length.
The screw that I described turns into the will nut.
          Thanks

            Rich,
Chuck the threaded portion of the screw into a drill press, or ordinary electric or air driven drill. Use a file to carefully reduce the diameter of the head. The drill press will work better because it is more stable.

              Dick, Terry, Joe,
              Thanks for all the info.
This is an amazing board on where to acquire things, and how to get things done.
              Thx

I agree with Terry. However, keep in mind that if the diameter of the screw head is reduced, it will not create a configuration exactly the same as the original screws. Instead of the "knife edge" of the original screws, you will have a much "thicker" periphery. This may well be discernible when installed. If exact original configuration is important, I'd look for original configuration screws.

                  Thanks Joe. Good info.
I'll probably paint the head of C.C screws and install them since they look sooooo much like the originals.
Of course, as time goes by, I'll still look for the original screws. I have 8 of my originals.

Basically, what the original screws are are #10 screws with a #8 size head. I don't see why easily obtained #8 screws could not be used with the appropriate size well nuts.
