    Engine Identification

Would anyone be able to identification the year/horsepower/cubic inch of an engine with the following number(s):

    9 GM 3970020

These numbers are located on the drivers side of the block right next to where the flywheel casting bolts up to the block.......

    Thanks for your help...

We need the numbers that are stamped on the front engine pad. The pad is located just forward of the passenger side cylinder head. Look down along the front of the passenger side cylinder head. What numbers are stamped on that pad?

GM #3970020 is a block used only for 307 cid engines during the 1970-1973 period. The other information that Ed mentioned will help tie it down further.

        Ed,

Thanks for the reply. This is a block casting number (I believe) not a Engine Identification Number. Sorry, I should have said that in my earlier post. I am unable to read the EIN at this time........

        Thanks again

            Hi Clem,

No, none that I am aware of. I'm surprised to find that out - the only other time I had heard of that name was right here in Illinois (and that was only one family (no relation either)!

              Ed,

I looked again but didn't see a pad in the location you mentioned. Could the pad be located in a different place on this block (based on what Joe mentions in his reply - 307 cid).
If you don't think so, I'll need to get more light and open my eyes more!!

              Thanks Ed

It should be in front of the passenger side cylinder head block deck surface. If not, check by the oil filter or starter mount pad.

It should be in the same place as every other Chevrolet Gen 1 SB. I once owned a 1972 Chevelle with 307, and it had the pad at the passenger side front -- like we are used to.
