Re: Engine Start Up
Gary most would recommend using E.O.S. Assembly Lubricant #1052367. This is a GM product available from any GM car dealers parts department. Comes in a 16 oz container. Your new camshaft and lifters need this for break in. Also there are a lot of postings on this site about using diesel oil instead of regular oil because of the better engine protection for engines with flat tappet valve trains.- Top

Re: Engine Start Up
My engine rebuilder insists on using a single weight oil for first start - 30 weight. He's hard over on no multi-weights. I'm not sure I agree with him, but my engine will be started in an ambient temperature that takes 30 weight anyway, so that's what I'm using. (No, I don't believe in those old foolish wives' tales. But that's not to say they aren't true.)
One thing that is important is the EOS or something similar. Some of the camshaft manufacturers have their own.- Top

Re: Engine Start Up
Caution if your 327 has solid lifters. Diesel oil or oil with ZDDP compound is required. Check the archives and Duke's article in the latest Restorer. Know of several members that lost cams in new engines before the lack of ZDDP became known. Gary....NCRS Texas Chapter

The addition of a pint of EOS to any oil will provide all the necessary protection---and then some.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Engine Start Up
There's no such thing as "start-up oil." Use 15W-40 CJ-4 with a bottle of EOS and use a "preoiler" while rotating the engine through a couple or revolutions.
I've discussed engine breakin many times including my recommendations for filter and oil changes during the breakin period including within the past week or two.

Re: Engine Start Up
Gary,
Comp Cams has an additive p.n. COC159. This additive is specifically to address the problems with recent changes in motor oil. Comp recommends this for start up and for continued use to protect the cam. I have also seen a product made by Brad Penn. They have a specific oil for break in. One of our local engine builders swears by it. Hope this helps.
