    1970 rear sping cup installation

Hi, guys. Does anybody have a good method for attaching the bushing cups into a replacement rear leaf sping, or should I just let the sping tension hold them in place as before?

I plan to drive the car frequently, if that matters. Thanks.

The typical approach is to crimp the cups using a press...

      Rich,

I just finished developing a simple system to do exactly what you're asking about. I'm working on an article for the Restorer on the tooling and how it works with a colleague who just used it this week to redo the spring and T-arm cups on his '65. Send me an e-mail to garybeaupre@comcast.net and I can tell you more about it.

With the spring in the car or out?

        Rich,

If your spring is out of the car, the task is straightforward, as Jack implied.

The new system I have will work with the spring in the car, although, of course, you need to remove the main leaf end bolt to use the in-car system.

Those are the same cups used in the T/A. They can be installed off the car by using a piece of steel the diameter of the cup to support it then a couple of ball peen hammers with various size balls is all you need.

Since my spring is off the car and apart for cleaning/painting, this sounds like the best plan. I don't have a press, so is there anything in particular I should tell my machinist when I bring him the bottom leaf and the cups, or is the job straightforward?

            Thanks.
