Re: '68 Rally Wheel Trim Ring
I just looked at about fifty trim rings getting ready for Carlisle. I found that all trim rings I had with one set of clips on the valve stem the one inch front face that gets curbed was flat. If the clips were not on the valve stem the one inch face has a slight concave arc to it. What is the going price to get a few light scratches out of a set of trim rings?Lyle

Re: '68 Rally Wheel Trim Ring
I guess it depends on the year - what year is yours, Ken?
My '68-'69 TIM&JG only addresses four clips with one always mounted at the valve stem. There is no other mention of whether the ring is smooth or has a step; nor does it address anything about the valve stem opening or inner lip finish of the trim ring.
Mine is a 75..They have 4 clips just as they should- Top

Re: '68 Rally Wheel Trim Ring
I have attached a picture of the trim rings on my '68. It does have the step in the outer portion of the ring. It has the 4 clips and in the correct position. By the correct position I am referring to the numbers on a clock. If the vave stem hole is 12 position, there is a clip there and at position 3, 6, and 9. I am not the original owner of the car but did not lose a point on the trim rings in the 6 times it has been judged. Top Flight 2007 was the latest judging of the car.Attached FilesTerry Buchanan

Re: '68 Rally Wheel Trim Ring
Ken-----
All of the GM 68-82 wheel trim rings have the 4 clips for attachment to the wheel. That's for sure. The issue of the POSITION of the clips is a separate one. Some say that the rings used in PRODUCTION had the clips in a particular position with one at the valve stem hole and the others spaced 90 degrees apart. It has also been inferred that it was the SERVICE-only trim rings that had the clips randomly positioned, but still 90 degrees apart.
I have a hard time understanding how GM would have had certain trim rings with a "precise" location of clips manufactured for PRODUCTION while having other trim rings OF THE SAME PART NUMBER manufactured for SERVICE with more random positioning of the clips.
I tend to think that the exact same rings were used for PRODUCTION and sold for SERVICE at any particular time. It may be that at some POINT IN TIME the requirement for "precise" positioning of the clips was eliminated. This may have occurred before or after the rings ceased to be used in PRODUCTION.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: '68 Rally Wheel Trim Ring
I agree Joe at some point all trim rings were made with the one set of clips placed at random. I have some of what I call the later style that you can still buy and sometimes a set of clips is very close to the valve stem hole. I know on 75's the clip was still on the valve stem as stated in the 75-77 manual. The manuals I have for 78-82 just say four clips.Lyle
