    Parts source for doors?

I posted just a little bit ago about my replacement battery and now when I was pulling the inside door release handle it came off in my hand. This is for a 1972 and, from the AIM, the part is called "control assembly, 3966719-0", page M139, UPC 1 doors, sheet K8 . To clarify, this is the dohickey that the inside door release handle attaches to, via a T channel (my usage) and a retaining screw. If you look at the AIM, view B shows the channel clearly.

When I examined the part where the handle attaches, specifically the T channel, I noticed that both lips of the channel were almost completely gone. I seriously doubt that this part is available in repro so my question is, should I do some serious looking at Carlisle or is there some other source for this part? And, while I am looking, does anyone know if there are different numbers for right and left hand assemblys?

    Thank you in advance,
    Gary

Yes, the "control assemblies" are side-specific. They are GM #3966719 and 3966720 as described in the AIM. They are discontinued but they ARE available in reproduction. The reproductions appear excellent to me. I would go with a reproduction since these are life-limited and who knows how much life a used one has left in it?

The usual "failure mode" for these things is the component of the control assembly to which the inside door release handle is actually attached. It's a "zinc diecast" piece and it usually breaks. Since it's not available separately and the control was/is always serviced as an assembly, one needs to replace the whole assembly.

Thank you, Joe. Looks like I should have searched catalogs first and asked the question second.

The channel that holds the door handle often cracks when 'Bubba' attempts to R&R door panels by using the release handle as a 'crow bar' to fully open up the mechanism so it'll clear the hole in the door panel....

          Jack,
That could well be the problem. I really don't understand though why they engineered this mechanism out of pot metal instead of steel. Oh well, I wanted to take that door apart anyhow.
