    1966 427 390 over spray

    Hi
Was the bypass hose on the water pump installed befor or after the engine was painted on a 1966 427 390. Looking to find out if it had over spray on it.
    Thanks Tony

      Tony,

As Joe mentioned, the hose and clamps were installed before the paint operation. A crude mask, or cover, that was installed over most of the hose, prevented paint from covering the center section but both ends of the hose and at least part of each clamp showed varying amounts of orange. Some areas would show a definite mask line in the paint and in other areas, the color may trail off in a mist coat as some of the color crept under the mask.

If you look closely at the photo of the Tonawanda engine paint booth below, you'll see a crude, flat cover on the bypass hose; that engine has an iron intake. Engines with aluminum intakes got a vacuum-formed plastic mask as well that covered the intake.

I've seen posts here and elsewhere over time talking about the dangers of hanging the engine from plates attached to the carb mounting bolts. Apparently the General thought it was safe. I've done it, but I don't think I'd ever do it again.

I would not, look at how many workers lost their life each year in those safe environments. When I was there in the 70's, it was at least one fatal accident each year.

On another note - how did the asy plant pick these up, the same plate?

This picture is hard to make out - I saw a dead thread about a guy that was writing the GM archives, is there a better photo of what got painted and how?

Nope - the assembly plant used a scissors-type hook that grabbed under the exhaust manifolds (until lift hook brackets appeared in 1968).
