When I disconnected the engine wiring harness from the fuse panel connectors at the firewall during replacement of the harness, one of the connectors pulled away from the fuse panel/firewall. Naturally, there are now a couple of the pins that have separated from the fuse panel connector. I'm assuming that the connectors are integral to the rear of the fuse panel but am hoping that the panel somehow will separate from the remainder of the main instrument harness. Could it be that simple or should I prepare myself to replace the entire harness?

Re: 67 Fuse Panel Connectors
If you are referring to the clips that actually hold the fuses, they snap into the fuseblock, and if they come out, they usually take the fuseblock retaining ledge with them. Otherwise the Fuseclips may have become so weakened with time that thay have lost tension, in either case, without looking at it, I'd be leaning toward harness replacement if I had this problem.Bill Clupper #618- Top

Re: 67 Fuse Panel Connectors
The terminals used in that application are called a "Twinlock" as both sides of the connection have the same configuration. What is the size of the wire where you hae the problem? the 2973915 version (18-20 gauge) were available in boxes of 25 in the standard parts catalog, however the connectors (the translucent plastic) are not available from that source.Bill Clupper #618- Top

Re: 67 Fuse Panel Connectors
The terminals or Twinloks as you called them seem to still be attached to the wires but have pulled out from the plastic plug. When I try and plug the engine harness in, there's nothing to hold the loose wires/terminals in place and they won't maintain contact. Were the 2 white translucent plugs extending thru the firewall an integral part of the fuse panel? If so, can the fuse panel be separated from the main harness and be replaced without doing the entire main harness?- Top

Re: 67 Fuse Panel Connectors
The translucent plugs are actually a part of the engine side wiring set, and they are snapped onto the black connector that covers the rear side of the fuseblock. There is a flex arm on the top and bottom that goes through a window on the transluscent plug to retain it. The connectors as they are called, retain the wires in the proper location to mate to the back of the fuseblock itself. Ther eis no way to assess the condition of the system over the internet. I would suggest you have a knowledgable individual in your area take a good look at the situation and suggest options. If the terminals have pulled out of the connector, this suggests an overheating of the terminals melting the locks that keep them in place, not a situation to be desired. If this is the case, replacement of all the wiring harnesses might be in order, as the electrical system is capable of carrying a lot of power, and greating a large problem if not properly maintainde.Bill Clupper #618- Top

Re: 67 Fuse Panel Connectors
The translucent connectors of the new engine harness are obviously good. It's the black ones on the back of the fuse block that are failing. I think the plastic is simply brittle from age and a couple of the wire terminals have pulled out. Corvette Central has a "Wiring Harness Bulk Head Connector Repair Kit" that I'm contemplating trying. Having just reinstalled the engine, steering column, and instrument cluster, I'm trying to avoid pulling the entire dash harness out. If anyone else has used this product I'd like to know how it turned out.
Bill, I appreciate your replies and insight.- Top
