    Re: 61 Overheating - Radiator?

Thanks Doug. Those are all good ideas. I'll check them all, because my buddy is about to pull his hair out. I have the timing set at about 14 degrees now, just to get it to idle smoothly. I've leaned the carb out because of that also. I know leaning them out will make it hot too, but it runs like **** at 4 degrees where it should be. The idle screws are one full turn out. He drove again this afternoon after the changes we made, but it's still overheating. Duke: The carb is an aftermarket Edelbrock, which was on the engine before the rebuild. The intake is original, but the two ports in the manifold under the carb have been plugged. The carb does have two small ports on the bottom that match the intake ports, but the are factory sealed. It never overheated before the rebuild. The only thing that changed after the rebuild was the radiator.

I suggested this to John McRae to deal with his buddy's '67 427/390 oiling problems, and I suggest it to you.

Gather all receipts for the rebuild and talk to the "engine builder" if necessary to determine the exact brand name, part number, and specs that were used in the rebuild for every single part that was replaced!

All too often these "engine builders" fill the engine up with aftermarket parts including camshafts that have too much overlap, which are imcompatible with the base engine OE spark advance map, and you end up with a cantankerous POS. With few exceptions these guys have absolutely no insight into the engine system engineering principals that make a good engine.

The other thing I don't understand is how you can put an Edelbrock AFB clone on a WCFB manifold. They have differrent bolt patterns!

The intake must have been changed as well, as there isn't a carburetor on the planet other than a WCFB that will fit on a WCFB intake (other than a 4-Jet, and they're all in museums). Jerry, what's the casting number on the intake?

Thanks Duke. I doubt if he still has the receipts. The engine was rebuilt two years ago. It's had this problem since day one of the rebuild. He used the same cam. Apparently it was OK. I don't know all the details on the rebuild. I do know it was already bored 30 over, so they just cleaned up the cylinders. The carb has two sets of mounting holes for the intake. He's had it for several years. We'll keep trying things until we find the problem.
