    L71 BB Distributor 1111258

I've searched the forum for this but have been unable to find an answer...... Where (if there are any) are the number(s) which identify the subject distributor? I know that there is a metal band (external) however, are there any other markings, etc. which would be stamped on the distributor itself, the cap, rotor, etc. which would be visible with/without removing the distributor? Did this distributor have two sets of points or one set? I've read a number of messages related to the points sets that should be used as replacements, etc. as well as the rotor. I don't believe that I read (however, perhaps I did and forgot to write it down!) the replacement number for the cap......Is there one still available?

Thanks for your help - continuing (slowly) to work on my L71......

There is no way to positively ID a distributor's original part number if the aluminum band has been removed. A distributor's original part number can be "narrowed down" by reference to the part number derivative on the installed vacuum control (assuming it's original) and the 3 character coding on the "auto cam" on the top of the mainshaft (assuming it's original to the distributor). This is far from definitive however since many different distributors used the same mainshaft/auto cam and same vacuum controls.

You can take just about any tach drive distributor, have it curved to the original advance specifications for any particular distributor, install a reproduction ID band with that part number on it, and you've got a distributor of the desired part number which is indistinguishable from a distributor originally manufactured of that part number.

The GM #1111258 distributor was NEITHER a single point distributor NOR a dual point distributor; it was a MAGNETIC PULSE type distributor (i.e. "transistor ignition"). The last use of a dual point distributor in a Corvette was 1962 although a small number may have been used for 1963, too. After 1963, only single point or TI-type were used through 1971. 1972-74 used single point ONLY.

A distributor cap and rotor for your application are available from AC Delco. However, they are not configured just like original pieces. They're functional replacements, though. I recommend using Accel kit #8124 for rotor and cap.

      Bob,

As always Joe is spot on. I will offer one further nugget of info to consider: just as points type distributors can have their ID band replaced, so too can TI distributors. So if you are going to shell out the big bucks for the relatively rare 1111258, caveat emptor! I know of at least one person who will happily "reproduce" any TI distributor to original specs. This person advertises it as a reproduction and prices it accordingly, but there may be others who are less scrupulous.

        Joe and Joel,

Thank you for your replies. I'm not sure what I was thinking when I asked about the single or dual points (I've also been working on a car (not a corvette, but a Chevrolet....!) that has a dual point distributor and.......). Additionally, I was not aware of some of the other areas to look for coding such as the auto cam, etc. - I will look for these also.
Thank you again for your excellent replies - I appreciate the support.
