    Camera settings for Restorer articles

Does anyone know the minimum acceptable camera resolution settings for photos to be submitted with articles for the Restorer? I think there were some guidelines published in a recent issue, but I can't put my finger on it.

    Thanks,

    Gary

It's not only about pixels were the rule more is better counts. But also how large it would be printed in the magazine is a parameter. Further more good lenses resulting in high contrast pictures and good lightning conditions certainly helps in creating great pictures!!!

Regarding resolution for small prints use at least a 3.3Mp camera and try to get the interresting part framed within the whole range of the picture (so no empty edges).

Experiment a lot with angles, lightning and usage of flash (or not)...

    regards,

I use an 8-year-old Sony 3.3MP camera to shoot all my magazine stuff, at the highest resolution it offers (2048x1536) - produces 1.5MB .jpg images, and my photo editor is happy with that for half-page photos in 4 colors on glossy paper (Corvette Enthusiast magazine).

Thanks John. That's exactly what I needed to know. I assume that the 2048 pixels in a half page layout of about 7" width would give close to 300 ppi, which is what I've read is appropriate for decent magazine quality.

Gary, if possible submit photos in RAW format, that is Vinnie's preference

            Gary,

If possible...RAW is preferrable, however if you don't have that capability on your camera, jpeg is fine...but if you open it in a photo editing program such as Photoshop, save it as a TIFF file instead of a jpeg...every time you open and close a jpeg file, it loses quality...no so with a tiff file...jpegs will work too and as soon as I get them, I'll convert them to tiff files...

              Gee...
I still shoot everything with my old Nikon F3, ASA 100 for prints (color and B/W) and ASA 64 for slides. I can't find Kodachrome 25 anymore. When didtal camers offer the resolution of that I'll make the big change over.

                    Yeah...all the above...

I use a Sony DSC f717 5.0 mega pixels (2560x1920) and it permits me to zoom in and capture detail photos such as date code part numbers. Today, these cameras are 8 and probably over 10 mega-pixels.

Here's a 65.4 KB image of an M21 assembly date code that was cropped and saved in jpeg. It's reduce to the 65 KB to accommodate the web format of our board. I learned that our editor prefers tiff and I'll begin to work and save them in the tiff format learning that there is a degradation of quality as I manage my photo files.
