    1958 Colors, Charcoal/Black?

    I have the 4th edition of the Judging Manual. The chart indicates that there were no black interiors in '58, only Charcoal is that correct?

    Also it only lists Charcoal rather than Black as an exterior color. Since I have only seen a very small number of Charcoal cars my impression is that Chevy didn't produce too many. I am also under the impression that Black of which I have seem many replaced Charcoal. I do not know this to be a certainty. What is the true story on Black or Charcoal exteriors as it is known today?

    Daniel;

    I have a Franklin Mint 1/24 model and the sales data that went with it is for a Charcoal exterior, red interior and silver inset. If they say it was actual then it must be so, right?

    Seriously, I have seen original 58's in Charcoal (Metallic Black) a number of times so I'm sure they are not all so rare. I'm sure there is a lot of data to support this and will be forthcoming.

      Noland and I were the first to even put this out in 87, before that no one knew how to tell the colors.

        Re: 1958 Colors, Charcoal/Black?

        I had back in the mid - 80's a 58 that was red/red white coves when I bought it, since I had just come off 4 yrs. drving a red 63S/W I redid the 58 in charcoal and kept the red int.. I wanted a dark color to highlite all the chrome - and according to all the books at the time Charcoal was the only dark color available in 58. After I had the car done and started to take it to shows I remember certain Judges say that at the tail end of production they dropped charcoal off the list of paint available and replaced it with black but never made a black 58 interior. I don't know however if that was correct.
        When I bought it it had a 245HP engine and had automatic trans. and power windows, when we took it apart to paint it we found holes in the frame for power top rams and 1 switch buried down in the well for the top.
        Took me 7 months to find a complete power top unit which I bought through Noland. It was the only one I have ever run across with the 3 options - sorry I sold it but I am 6'3" and over 200lbs. and got tired of driving it with the top down only.

          Now, BTW. I have 58# 6308. It is Charcoal, red, and silver, and has "CHAR" on the rear panel.

              Roy,
              You were the first to write an article on that, but please don't insult us with the idea that no one knew that before that. It was pointed out to me in the midwest by a Corvette enthusiast in 1975.

                  And, as I recall, such "custody" resulted in at least a letter from "Snidely, Whiplash & Finnagle, Attys-at-law"? But what does that have to do with Charcoal/Black?
