    67 AC compressor

    Trying to install the AC compressor on a 67 BB today and the holes don't want to line up with the brackets. The compressor model # is 5910645 Harrisson. I'm not sure this is even a Corvette compressor. Any thoughts on this?

    Thanks,
    Rex

    Re: 67 AC compressor

    Hello;
    A 6 Compressors are basically the same though out GM except for the pulleys and sometimes a clutch. Ford even used them on their high end cars.

    Are you referring to front to back brackets (not lining up) ? There are shims available to achieve alignment.
    Many applications had shims in the mounting between the rear bracket as it bolts to the compressor.
    Those shims often fell out unnoticed during service.

    When restoring have had to shim and align most of the applications to get the compressor to pulley in align w/ the water pump.

    Hope this helps.

        Re: 67 AC compressor

        Got another compressor off of a small block car (had to change some brackets), but still having some problems getting things to line up. When the compressor is mounted to the brackets, the one that bolts to the front of the head won't line up.

        Could someone post some pics of the compressor mounted to a 67 big block engine, front and rear, showing details of the brackets / mounting?

        Thanks,
        Rex

          Ray,

          Running into the same problem. The rear mount that holds the back of the compressor (cast 'triangular' shaped bracket) - any idea if this has any specific orientation ?

          AC pulley is off with respect to the water pump pulley. Right now, the back isn't shimmed.......

            Bob;
            Any chance of posting pictures of the compressor mountings?

              I added 3 compressor shims to the back, it did improve it somewhat.

              Pictures show before and after shimming, so I think another couple of shims may do the trick.

              The first photo, the alternator belt is loose.

              The shims were "paper thin" - I didn't mike them - also not sure if the shims were available in different thicknesses ??

                Compressor brackets attached, maybe hard to see.

                  Bob;
                  The pictures look like the mounting angle is "Typical Factory"
                  I should add pictures don't show this type of specifications very well and this writing is only my opinion.
                  TFP is a judges opinion also.
                  As far as functionality the length of the belt from the water pump and crankshaft pulleys allows for variance in the alignment.
                  Can you get someone local to you to give an opinion on the pulley alignment?

                    Re: 67 AC compressor

                    I shimmed the rear .145 inches, now it looks like the picture below. It's better and, when view from the compressor side looks straight.

                    Viewed from the drivers side, to my eyes, the compressor seems off a little. But, we'll see what it does.

                    This had aftermarket Dayco belts, the AC belt "rolled". Installed Quanta reproductions and noted the AC belt is quite a bit "deeper" (side view)

                    So.......we'll see how this works before I go too far with shimming and possibly grinding the AC mounts to make a correction that may not be needed.

                      Bob;
                      First thought when reading the "A/C belt rolled" is more a function of tension then a result of poor alignment.
                      Hope this helps.
