    what might my problem be?

Car is 1967 big block. Problem first occurred about 2 years ago. About 50 miles into a lengthy drive i stopped to refuel. When i tried to start car it would not turn over..no sound... nothing..as tho no connection to battery at all. So i pushed the car over to the side and considered my options. About 20 minutes into the problem i looked behind the ignition for lose wire connections...wiggled the wires and it started right up.

I have not had a duplication of the problem until a couple weeks back. After driving the car until it was good and warm we stopped somewhere. After about 10 minutes returned to the car and it would not fire up, would not turn over, no sound, nothing..as tho no connection to battery. Wiggled wires..no luck..repeated this a few times..no luck. So we sat a bit and considered how to get the car home...after about 20 minutes i tried key one more time and it ignited....and we got back home. Immediately after arriving in garage and turning off car i tried to restart...and the problem was alive again...absolutely zero response to the key in ignition.

Went back to car in 15 minutes and still would not start. So i dont`t touch the wires or anything and just wait until morning. Car is cool..it starts right up in the morning.

Most of my driving is 10 -30 miles and the trips end back in the garage without turning the the car at some remote location...and when i arrive home i don`t tend to attempt to turn the car back on. In the instances where i do stop somewhere and need to restart car it is generally driven only a few miles. So it appears that when car gets good and warm something happens that car will not turn over and there appears to be no connection at all to battery.....when car cools back off it all seems fine.

My mission is to identify the problem and get it solved so car is road reliable....but am unable to repeat the situation for a mechanic....any theories on what problem might be.

remove the two multi-wire plugs on the engine side of the firewall just below the master cyl. clean the connectors inside the plugs and the connectors on the engine side of the fuse panel(which is what the two plugs snap into). believe there are 6 connectors per plug plus the 12 on the engine side of the fuse panel. i use a fine copper wire brush. after cleaning, air blow residue away. then take silicone dielectric paste (3-M sells it) and smear on all 24 connectores and re-assemble. good luck, mike

Few days ago there was a post with about the same problem as you mention on your 67. Do you have a battery disconnect switch on your 67? Believe the previous poster found his problem in the battery disconnect switch.

do an ADVANCED search in the archives using the words "starter" and "problem" (don't use quotes) and search titles only.

To add to Mike McCagh's response.....I had the same problem with a car of mine some years ago. The connector was it. NAPA sells a product in their Echlin product line p.n. CE1. It is a chemical the dissolves corrosion on fine electrical connectors in late model vehicles where brushes or emery cloth cannot reach the area that requires work. This product also preserves and plating that may be on the connector. It is not cheap ($75.00 + retail) but it works. Hope this helps.
