    1971 TI Distributor Cap

From what I have read the correct distributor cap would be GM1971244 delco-remy or replace ment was GM#800061 which was copper and had an R on the cap. Does anyone make a distributor cap that will not loose points in judging? If so whom and if not which one lossing the fewest points. Thanks

    Paul,
You should be able to find a nice used or NOS Delco cap which will give you 100% of the originality and condition points. Your 71 will require DELCO REMY PATENT PENDING R embossed ot it. You can go with the current reproduction but I personally would much prefer real vintage Delco. The current reproductions may recieve an originality deduct.

The ORIGINAL cap used for your application was the GM #1971244. This cap has ALUMINUM contacts. The GM #800061 was SERVICE-only for your application.

Strangely, while the GM #800061 was the SERVICE cap sold during 1969-74 through the GM Parts System, the cap used in PRODUCTION, the GM #1971244, was sold only through the Delco parts system during that same period.

In 1975, after points style distributors were no longer used in PRODUCTION, the 1971244 cap became the SERVICE cap available through BOTH the GM and Delco parts systems. It remained that way for MANY years, although there were nuance differences in the cap over those many years.

I don't think the distrib, cap is any different for TI application. Look for a good used original. There's a bunch out there for sale.

I have seen several Delco-Remy #276904047 brown with copper listed for 66-74 corvettes. This one would be incorrect. The only correct for for a 1971 must be :Black, Aluminum contacts, with a R embossed on the cap, along with Delco-Remy. Correct?

also "Patent Pending R" will appear in the space opposite the "Delco Remy". Millions were made over the years, used original beats reproduction every time.
