    '67 outside mirror - bowtie or no-bowtie???

My '67 Coupe, VIN 05818 (Dec'66) has an outside review mirror without a bowtie. From memory, I believe that it wasn't till later that the mirrors didn't have the bowtie.

The date of my mirror is ?? AX ?? and it appears to be original, but I can't confirm for sure.

So my question is, could/should my mirror have a bowtie or not? How would judges view this? And what would be a typical date on a mirror for a Dec'66 build.

As ususal, thank you for the help.

    Hi Kurt,

From memory, all cars thru 8000 have bowtie, both are encountered for a couple thousand, and then it disappeared. So it would seem to me you should not have a bowtie on your car.

You mention an AX code. I think that is the the manufacturer's code fro Ajax. There should be numbers on either side of that AX that give you the mirror date (ex 3 AX 7 for March, 1967).

Would be interested to know the date code to see if the rule from 8000 holds true based on your specific dates.

    Joel

      Kurt,
I think joel meant to say with a vin# below 8000, such as yours, you should have a bowtie. I own 1967 serial # 346X and 546X and they both have bowtie on the exterior mirrors. Sorry for the news.

Based on the above info and looking at the mirror date this could be a later replacement mirror.

It's hard to read the dates but it almost looks like a "D" or "13" AX- 6 or 8.

For what it's worth, my original 67 (Vin# 5304) has the bowtie and what appears to be "7 - AX - 6". My car is an early December car. Also, the number after your "AX" is definately NOT a "6". My AX is in the same font as yours yet my 6 (which is clear) is contiguous and rounded, not split down the center.

I thought that the bowtie on the mirror started at the beginning of the production run, took a break mid-way through, and then came back. (going from memory here, my JG is at home)

                Kurt,
From the 67 JG the bowie was present up to approximately #8000 as Joel said. From #8000 through #10,500 both mirrors with and without were found. From #10,500 to the end of 67 production the plain mirror back was used. Joel is also correct in the AX =Ajax. Also used was DMI for Donnally Mirror, Inc. The date code is decipfered as 11 AX 6 or 11 DMI 6 which would be November 1966. My 67 has a build date of December 28, 1966 and the mirror is dated "9 DMI 6". Hope that helps.
                Take care,
                Shooter

PS If your mirror is dated correctly you could get a Bow Tie mirror from Trim Parts and used your glass. Trim Parts makes the correct replacemnt.
