    68 Keys, Flight Judging Question

For Flight Judging, are the both sets of keys suppose to have the coded knockouts intact or should the knockouts be in the envelope with the second set of keys. Also, does the key envelope suppose to have the codes written on it? This is not clear in the Judging Manual. Thanks,

Normal dealer new car prep (what today is called Pre-Delivery Inspection = PDI) called for the dealer to punch out the codes from the keys. Did all dealers do it? NO. Long story short -- it doesn't matter, nor does the marking or lack of it on the key envelope.

It was common in the 60's-70's for dealers to remove the knockouts (so the owner had no clue what the codes were), and they'd write the key numbers on the bank's copy of the loan paperwork; if the car had to be repossessed, the bank could make a set of keys for the "repo man".

When I found out that I had no key Knock-outs with my keys, I went down to my local Chevy dealer and asked if they had ANY extra's. The sales manager opened his drawer and there were a few hundred laying there. He said " take what you need". I grabed one for the round key and one out of a square key and I was in business. I've had those knock-outs for 4 flight judgings, with no problems.

My dealer left the keys intact, (1971) I took the knockouts out and kept them in a small plastic zip lock bag. The key codes however are on my invoice..a lot easier to read than the little punched out pieces and I have made copies from that code, they work fine!

This may be a stupid question, but how exactly do they punch out the knockout section?

There is a Kent Moore tool that does it easily. Basically it is like a nut cracker, but with two nubs on one handle, and one located between the other two on the other handle. Thus as the tool is closed the two nubs support the key and the single nub pushed on the knockout -- presto out it comes.

I think a punch and hammer will do the same thing if you can support the key outside of the knock out.

If you want to see one -- stop buy your local GM dealer and ask. They should have the tool in the front of the store.
