Just finished reinstalling my entire telescopic column and have about 3/8" gap exposed where the column escutcheon meets the instrument cluster. It's as if the column is positioned too low because the escutcheon doesn't want to meet up with the bottom of the cluster where the two small mounting screws go. I'm fairly positive this gap wasn't there before. The cluster is proper for the car with an assembly date stamped (blue ink) on the back of October 17th, 1966. Car assembled December 9th, 1966. I can't see any adjustment whatsoever to correct this. The cluster is fixed by 5 mounting screws, the column is fastened to the clutch/brake pedal bracket which is mounted to the firewall with 4 bolts. No additional washers were used to reinstall other than what was removed and I cross referenced the Assembly manual. Everything is as tight as it can be too. The column simply goes where it goes as does the instrument cluster. So have I missed something? Does anyone else have this problem?

Re: 67 steering escutcheon poor fit
The '67 column doesn't attach directly to the pedal support - there's an intermediate bracket that bolts to the pedal support, and the column bolts to that bracket. The interface between the parts is angled, and that feature allows you to set the height of the column exactly where it comes through the cluster to engage the escutcheon exactly for proper fit.
Loosen the bolts attaching the intermediate bracket to the pedal support AND the bolts attaching the column bracket ears to the intermediate bracket, push up (vertically) on the column to bottom out the pieces, and slide the intermediate bracket fore-aft to position the column vertically at the cluster opening; when you have it the way you want it, tighten all the bolts.- Top

Re: 67 steering escutcheon poor fit
My 1968 Chassis Service Manual has a section on installing the various different Chevrolet steering columns into Chevelles, Impalas, Camaros, Corvettes, etc. The Corvette instructions do not refer you to the correct installation drawing. However, the correct drawing is on a different page and is labeled as Corvette so you just have to search it out.
By moving around the intermediate bracket it allows for side to side as well as some up and down mounting adjustment.

Tom
Thanks for brining this up, my 67' tele suffers the same "escutcheon gap" problem and I've ignored it. Now I learn there's an intermediate adjustment to make and that might give me a bit more leg room too!
Please let us know how you make out.- Top
