Crayon Markings on Under Body/Chassis ?

While continuing the "mind numbing" process of removing the undercoating while retaining as much of the paint as possible (for Bowtie Candidate) I came across the Crayon markings under the floor heat shields.

The drivers side appears to be straight forward with the hand written letters "PB" which I assume was meant for "Power Brakes" as mine has that option.

The passenger side has the numbers "443" and appears to be in the same hand writing as the drivers side. Am I correct that the meaning of these markings found on the passenger side is unknown. If there is some correlation as to the options the car is a 72 coupe, Base Eng, 4spd, PS, PB, A/C, Deluxe Interior/Black, Exterior Sunflower Yellow, original tires are Goodyear RWL. Thanks in advance for your help!!

    Norm,

443 is the job number, which was used for internal tracking purposes as the body went down the line. You'll find it in the doors, rear deck, etc.

That's cool Patrick.... thanks!!! Will that number be found on any of the paperwork.... I have some of the shipping documents from the dealer when I bought it..... it would seem like the "job number" would show up on some internal paperwork,,,,,, OR.... was just an internal number within St. Louis?? thanks again Patrick!!!!

        St. Louis internal only.
You "might" find it scribbled on your tanks sticker...or might not.

          Hi Norm,
Here's a picture of my 71's tank sticker. It shows the # that Patrick mentioned. The #186 appears on the toe board, the pasenger's side trans tunnel inside the car and on the bulkhead behind the seats. The #89 is the last 2 digits in the cars VIN and appears for instance inside the 2 roof panels and on the floor of the storage area behind the seats. Interesting!!!
          Regards,
          Alan

Re: Crayon Markings on Under Body/Chassis ?

Alan & Patrick,,, thanks for the additional info. My tank sticker doesn't have the job number written on it. However where yours has the last two digits of the VIN, mine has a slightly different written number. The number written is 405. The 4 is larger than the 05. Very much like some who write the time with the hour larger and the minutes smaller and elevated OR like writing a dollar firgure with the dollar figure larger and the cents figure smaller and elevated. The 05 number fits with your explanation as that is the last two digits of mine. Mine is almost a year after yours Alan with a 11/03/71 build date.

btw,,, is it correct sometimes a 2nd tank sticker can be found in a second location,,, ie under the seats or..?????? Thanks again guys,,, I just don't see how the passion for Vettes could possibly exist without this website!!!!

              Norm,

Let me know if you're ever interested in selling.
              Nov 3rd is my birthday.
I would have turned 4 that year.

Oh, and I know of another 72 owner on the board with a Nov 3rd of 71 built car.

Re: Crayon Markings on Under Body/Chassis ?

Patrick.... If I ever sold it to someone, you'd the be one... a)have a deep appreciation for Vettes, b)has a 72 himself & of course c) to have the same birthday.

However, I had to create an legal entity that my two daughters are equal owners of in which the car will go to after my "graduation". Both when born, came home from the hospital in the Vette. Both get to drive it (although both very capable stick shift drivers,,, only drive the Vette with Dad along) and both know they would never sell it either. Probably because the Vette out lasted the marriage to their mother. (Had it before meeting the marriage, still have it after)

Would you mind sharing who also has the same build date... or would you give them my info to ask them to contact me,,, it would be great to see how close on the assembly line our cars were. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge!!!

Say, can any of you youngsters tell me if anyone has ever written a book about the locations and meanings of factory chalk or crayon markings?

I used to have a figure on my left front head that looked like almost a script figure 8, or it may have been a zero whose ends don't meet. Mine is a 63 340hp and it was in yellow crayon. It's gone now since I detailed the engine many years ago and I look back on it with fond regrets.

                    Patrick,
Do you think that other owner is interested in selling?

Not the last time I checked.
He already knows that his car is #1 on my list, 'cuz it's blue.

Maybe I'll be lucky enough to see him at Carlisle.
He can visit my 72 in the NCRS Gallery.
