    F70-15

    Goodyear Wide Tread. I have a tire mounted on a 1972 rally wheel that looks so nice I'm wondering if it is a reproduction. I'm told it came out of a 1972 Corvette spare tire tub and is original. Would someone tell me the differences between the originals and reproductions? Are the tires dated? Was the same tire used in 1970 as 1972? This one appears to have been on the ground but run very little.

    Thanks,
    Scott

    if you do a search there have been a couple recent posts regarding tire dates and how to read.

    I also rememeber an artical in the restorer not to long ago dealing with tire dates.

      Hi Scott
      Originals have 9 treads, repops have 7. If you can tell me the code I can try and decipher it for you.
      I think they did use the wide tread 70 to 72.
      Thanks, Grant

        Re: F70-15

        It has nine treads across including the innermost and outermost tread. I found this on the inside of the tire: Under DOT is MJU2 D1A242. Nearest the rim I found 225090-2WN. On the white letter side I see an ink stamp of B-8 and near that an ink daub the size of a Q-tip. The color of the ink daub appears silvery in color so that may be a paint oops from the argent silver on the rim. The B-8 stamp may have been another color that changed with age but does appear to be silver in color.
        Thanks to all.

          Bill gives good advice -- follow it.

          Grant gives you tread information for Firestone tires. Yours are Goodyears

          D1A242 = 24th week of 1972 or 1982 or 1992. I suspect the year is 1972. Be happy.

            Hmmm. Actually I did try to do an archive search for answers and found nothing definite before posting this thread. I have all my Restorers but sans a particular issue mentioned I didn't feel like thumbing through several issues trying to find the article. Sort of a similar situation as the archives...it's there somewhere. That's why I use the TDB to get quicker, accurate answers.
            Thanks for your help.

              While the tire you have is very likely an original, there is virtually no observable difference between an original Goodyear Speedway Wide Tread and the current reproduction offered by Kelsey Tire.

              The Goodyear Speedway Wide Tread was used from 1968 through 1972 on Corvettes although different sidewall configuration options were specific to certain years. There are also other "nuance" differences over the 68-72 period.

                Re: F70-15

                Thanks, Joe. There are several characteristics that make me believe it is an original spare. It's not my tire and rally as I purchased this spare and four 1972 dated rallys for the owner while he is away in Missouri this weekend at the NCRS Nationals having his 1972 judged. He would like to have this information when he gets back here to get his goodies. And I can't use the tire as a spare in my '70 because of the dating on it.

                  Re: F70-15

                  According to the Bizzoco book your code means the following:
                  M= Goodyear produced domestically
                  J= Plant designation (Topeka, Kansas)
                  U2= F70-15
                  D1= raised white letters, 2 ply nylon
                  A= internal use
                  242= 24th week, 1972,82, 92 (as Terry noted earlier)
                  This code was initiated after May 22, 1971
                  Hope this helps.
                  Jeff
