69 SB Oil Dip Stick Tube Replacement.

The upper dip stick tube broke off at the base by the block. Is there a way to remove the broken piece from the block or will I have to drop the oil pan? If I have to drop the oil pan what is the best way to get the lower dip stick tube out without it breaking.

    Thanks,

    George

I was able to get the stub out by using a tap to put threads on the inside and then use a bolt and washers to "jack" the stub out. I can't recall the size of tap, but try 3/8-16 and see how it fits. It was not a perfect fit, but it worked for me.

I can't recall if I had to take the exhaust manifold off or not, but the exhaust manifold is easier than the oil pan.

Now if the fear of metal chips in your oil -- change the oil after doing this, but I used a lot of petrolium jelly around the tap to catch what I could -- gives you heartburn you will have to drop the pan.

The method that Terry described will work. You can also use a short section (about 1") of pipe which is just larger in ID that the "collar" on the stub of the oil tube, a thick washer (or, several stacked thinner washers) and a self-tapping screw of sufficient size to tap itself into the stub and about 1-3/4" long.

Place the short section of pipe over the stub. Place the washer(s) on top of the pipe. Run the screw through the washer(s) and down into the stub. Continue turning the screw until the stub is pulled up into the pipe section and free of the block.

If you need to remove the pan, removing the lower dip stick tube is VERY easy. Just tap it up with a small hammer until it pushes the upper dipstick stub out of the block. Then, you can just remove the lower dipstick tube from above (although you don't even need to remove it after it's pushed the stub out).

Re: 69 SB Oil Dip Stick Tube Replacement (Thanks Terr)y & Joe.

I decided to remove the oil pan. The possibility of having metal shaving in the oil pan makes me nervous and could make things worse. The engine has been rebuilt so removing the pan didn't take long. It took longer to clean up the gasket surfaces. Joe you answered the question about getting the lower tube out. I'll give it a try tomorrow. I'll replace both tubes since they are not expensive and I don't want to do this again.

        Thanks,

        George
