Re: replace rear wire harness
James,
I would say no you do not have to drop the gas tank. You will have to lower the drivers side muffler out of the way and remove the spare tire carrier as well as the rear valance panel to gain access to the rear lights etc.- Top

Re: replace rear wire harness
You do not need to remove the gas tank but it is not the easiest task to accomplish. If the rear harness is properly routed from from under the dash to the taillights you will need to remove the left kick panel and the metal cover under the carpet on the driver side interior sill. You will also need to remove the panel behind the seat that covers the folding top hardware and roll back the rear carpet over the drivers side wheel well. Then there is a rubber grommet through the rear bulk head that can be difficult to access. As mentioned the left side muffler needs to be removed which means the rear exhaust panel needs to go. I would budget a day or maybe a weekend depending on how you like work.
