    Medical ! Whats that ? Four years ago my union popped a $200 dollar per month surcharge on all retirees under 65. husband and wife. The sneaky thing was that they waited until February to let the guys know. most people in my union retire in January and quite a few would have stuck on the couple of more years. Active members pay a $30 copay.
    As far as GM cars go i have only owned 2 non GM cars in my 32 years of driving. We always manage to find one that pleases the family for a reasonable price. I should say that we always have at least one pickup or suburban in the driveway and really to not look for navigation or air conditioned seats.

      I really feel for the GM retirees that were counting on the lifetime of benefits. I was a child of parents that were raised in the depression. The thing that I was taught was to be independant... and dont count on anyone government or otherwise for anything. So as I reach retirement age these words are so true.

        The mistake I think you are making is the same one many Americans make with respect to small cars. They equate small cars with cheapness and a lack of features. Upgrading a car has typically meant including a larger engine. In reality, the big three can make a lot of money if they add lots of luxury features in small cars.

        My wife is a case in point. She recently bought a Civic in part because they offered leather seats, heated seats, a navigation system, high tech sound system, etc. and didn't try to bundle all that with a larger engine. Which GM product offers a Navigation system and 35+ mpg? Believe me, she would have liked to have purchased a GM product, but she likes small (but not tiny) cars AND upgraded content. And on our first highway trip of about 300 miles (traveling at a constant 59mph) we averaged over 43 mpg. There is no GM product that can do that.
        i think if gasoline at gone up with normal inflation it would be $3+ a gallon and if it come back down to $3 a gallon people will want big cars again. most cars that offer 30+ MPG will not fit people the size of most soccer moms that go 250+ pounds and still get 30+ MPG.

          Retiree Medical - What is that!

          Losing something you have had or thought you were going to get is tough - BUT - many of us never had or will get employer paid medical in our retirement. Count your blessings.

          My medical will come from my savings and Medicare.

            when the federal govt put in price and wage controls that started the medical benefits from employers because they could not give raises. unintended consequences comes when the govt gets involved. the cradle to grave care is ending and medicare will be next i am afraid.

              don't worry about your medical health care coverage. Senator Obama is going to give all of us health coverage.

                Tim;

                If you've ever been to an ER lately - practically at any hospital, you can get the picture of what medical care will be like if we take that hard left in November; extremely long waits to be seen by some inexperienced Doctor that can't even speak English. Heck, they take as many out the back door as those who are lucky enough to walk out the front.

                One other point, you mentioned the extreme solution being a possible second revolution. Well, my friend, you don't know how close we came to that in 1975 after the fall of Saigon. The military was very put back by the sense of betrayal on the part of our Congress at that time, and a very weak powerless President. You don't like to lose 50,000 of your comrads - all for nothing. It is hard to accept, and even harder to forget. Even after the passage of time, that memory lives on in a lot of old vets - yours truely included.

                  Doctors in the ER that speak English are not at a disadvantage as most of the ER patients here in So CA don`t speak English either.

                      Ridge;

                      Very well said. I too am surprised where this went as well. When I began it, truely I had not intended to make any political statement, rather my main interest was concern for the survival of the Corvette. I am still holding this concern as being of primary importance. I probably should have withheld my side note regarding the retirement health care, but it reflects a lot about the state of the business (and the country for that matter), and as it relates again to the survival of the Corvette.

                      Thanks to all who participated. I am impressed and honored to a part of a truely American organization which exemplifies what freedom is all about.

                              and the best part is you don't have to live in the district that pay your pension so if they raise the taxes to pay your COLA you don't have to help pay for it. my biggest mistake of my life was when i could have been postmaster in my home town when my uncle moved to a bigger postmaster's job but i turned it down because i already had a "good job" young and stupid
