No oil to heads Part 2

OK, got it running, rear cam plug was knocked in too far, pushed bearing forward and covered a hole, cam was notched too little, had that fixed. While installing cam, noticed all three of the front oil galleys were not plugged. Got that done, it turned over on the first try, oil now pumping to heads.

About 10 minutes into the break in, started to hear a "tock" sound coming from the carb. Car was overheating, the sound was not going away with adjusting timing, so I shut it down. I did not have time to adjust valves while it was running (hydraulic) and they were still pumping up when I shut it down, any ideas on the "tock" sound? Don't want to fire it up if it may be a major issue.

Thanks in advance. Motor is a stock 265 V8 out of a passenger car.

I don't know what the "tock" sound sound might indicate. However, I am absolutely shocked to hear that you found all 3 of the oil gallery plugs missing. For an engine builder to forget to do that is absolutely inexcusable. I could see where the 55-56 engine differences could throw a curve at some engine builders. However, there is NO excuse for the missing gallery plugs. All small blocks have these and all competent engine builders should be well aware of the need to install these.

Joe, at this point, I'm just glad to have it running and no fluid leaks. When I primed it this time, I pegged the oil pressure gauge at 60... I took photos of everything, I'll email them to the guy who "built" it and see his response. I decided to just ask for the cost of the parts to fix it myself, he agreed to that with no issue. I spent about 20 extra hours getting it going, a drop in the bucket compared to the 3 years I have been working on it. I'll adjust valves tomorrow and time it, maybe the "tock" sound will go away. One step closer to driving it after 26 years...

Yep, you got that one dead on Dave! Running to parts store after work, should have it fixed and running this afternoon.

        Thanks!
