    ID'ing a water pump

    Hello Everyone,
    I hope you are all well, it's been a long time. Can anyone tell me if a water pump with the number a, LG GM 9 then the number stamped below is S7049 1 The S could be an 8 or a 3 it is hard for me to tell. Is this pump for a 1958 283 motor ?

      I think the number is actually 3704911. This is the casting number for the waterpump used for 1955 and 1956 Corvettes. 1958 used casting GM #3736493. While the 3704911 is not correct for a 1958, it should be fully functional for a 1958.

          Hey Joe,

          Leave it to you to know. The only thing that's strange is there is no second 1 in the number on this pump. It's 7049 a space of !/4 inch and then a 1. The one for my car is just like the one in the AIM. Go Figure.

              I would guess that the lack of one of the "1's" is just a "flaw" in the pattern from which the sand mold was made for the casting. Perhaps the number broke off and no one noticed it for awhile. This is not the sort of problem that would cause the casting to be rejected for finish machining.

                  Yep, I've seen several 4911 pumps with irregular metal fill in the emboss area....

                      Hey Jack,
                      It is so nice to hear from you & Joe. Thank you for getting me the exact pump that is just like the one in the AIM. When I had the radiator repaired, I put in an aluminum one with an Elderbrock pump so I was able to use the car in the Arizona heat. It worked out great, the car never went over 180*. I know you remember how many extra parts I bought for Blu, just in case. Jim Clemens was very helpful too. They call me the gal with the 58 Vett in her closet ! LOL It's time for me to stop driving, so I don't want to mis-inform folks when they ask me what part is for what. I tell that wing nut story from Ebay so many times your ears must have been ringing. I look in at the board every now & then. I'm glad Roy is still sharing his electric shaver & other fun items. I was able to get everything but the patch. If anyone reading this post knows where to get one for a 58, I'd love to have the whole package. I was even able to get the Corvette Owners pin still in the box. I made a set of 4, from that one hubcap you gave me & they are a 10. I just had my transmission rebuilt & they took pictures of it, was so clean. Mike at Tri-City said it reflected the mileage & the part that broke would have been under warranty had that car been driven hard. Blu has had all very caring owners, how lucky can you get. It has been a great ride, I am just so sorry I wasn't able to meet you guy's at the convention in Utah. Utah would have been the icing on the cake for me.
