    1960 Fan and Shroud

How much clearance should be between the fan and the top of the shroud??

I was told that some of the earlier 1960 cars may have come with the 1959 type of shroud, my car is # 3961. I have the 1960 three peice shroud and am having problems with clearance and bolt holes lining up on the upper peice (reproduction). Possibly a manufacturing error??

What is the correct length of the spacer? I have two, one is 2 1/2" and the other is 1 7/8"

    Thanks in advance.

    Peter,

It's always possible that early in production a previous year piece may have made it onto the next year car, but your car is into mid-60 production, so that is not likely on yours. It sounds like your shroud is okay. I looked for and can't find a spacer I have, but I'm guessing the 1-7/8 is the right one. Also, your fan should be 17" and give you clearance of about an inch. The fan shouldn't be very far into the shroud at all.

You may have to redrill your repro. Do you have the original to use as a template?

      Peter:
My 60 is #3978 and it had a 1 7/8" spacer to begin with. I added a 1/2" spacer to get the fan closer to the radiator for better air flow. I still have about an inch clearance between the original 4 bladed 17" fan and shroud. My shroud is an original so I suspect the shroud you have may be causing your clearance problem. You can't go too far forward with the fan because it will hit the sway bar.

The design condition is to have the fan blades half-in and half-out of the rear edge of the shroud for maximum airflow; moving the fan forward from there actually reduces airflow.

My 60 is #3714. 3 piece shroud and my spacer measures 1.925". 100% original and has never run hot in the 33 years I've owned it.
