    54 winshield washer

What process do I need to do to get them pumping, they worked before just by putting water in jar and hitting button, since paint I just checked and now won't work, can hoses be reversed, vacuum would be the one with suction (on tongue hmm) can hoses at swithch be reversed and tried and what does cable at switch do to pump at firewall? Tried reversing hoses at jar, took unit apart in jar and cleaned, water goes in and out of jar and connections fine, water blows thru hose and works fine at winshield fine manually? Thanks again Brad

I'm home but have a 55 ,but let me try
1 engine vacuum to dash wiper switch 2 push wiper switch button it opens and routs vacuum to washer bottle 3 the vacuum in the bottle pushes water to squirters .
      That's how I think it works cant afford a 54 stuck with a 55

Hi Roy, do you know if the hoses at the switch can be interchanded, I seem to get more suction (inward from one vs the other) do not understand why they don't work now after paint when before I just put water in the jar and squirt, another brain teaser, these old vettes are a pain in the butt, baddd short engineers I guess. Thanks Brad, muffler from manifold must have to be taken off to get pan off correct? Brad

The hoses should interchange same size , Are you sure the bottle hoses did get interchanged

Roy, have tried every scenario, except taking wiper motor apart, took jar unit apart and it was real clean but cleaned it again, all parts seemed fine, if wipers work that means vacuum is getting to the switch so maybe when I push the button on dash somhow pressure is not being released to the other hose, is that possible and how to clean that, such a small unit seems like nothing to do to it, that seems like the last resort unless wiper motor? Thanks again Brad

Sounds to me like the wiper button switch is leaking vacuum. If you're getting constant vacuum at the switch and no vacuum coming out to the jar when button is pushed then it's leaking. I don't think the wiper motor has anything to do with this washer system. It get's it's vacuum from the fuel pump, same as the wiper motor.

Joe, back again, or any body, what is involved in the wiper switch for 54 removal and check, undue bezel and pull out from back, does the cable unhook from the wiper motor or from back of switch and how to dismantle and what to check for? Thanks Brad.

Brad, if memory serves correctly, the switch bezel is removed, the hoses removed from back, then you go to engine compartment and remove the wiper motor. 2 screws and the vacuum supply hose and it's yours. loosen the screw/clamp that retains the control cable (from the switch) and you'll see how it comes off. Don't move the motor shaft at the bottom of the motor, or the wipers themselves. Keep that alignment.

Do you have a plumbing drawing? If not, I'll look for mine and fax to you if you give me a fax number.

My fax is automatic, like my 54, and doesn't respond to manual commands.

I'll scan it in tonight and email to you. What's your email address? Send to me as a private message.
