Most of the guys that yak about engine oil are well meaning, but technically ignorant. They have no automotive/oil industry education or experience and know nothing about the API service category and certification system that's been in place for over 50 years.

Rarely is the API service category and certification system mentioned or reference documents cited. My article has Internet links to all the key reference documents if you want to dig deeper and verify all my facts and conclusions.

Greg, "Any brand will do". Don't restrict yourself to just Shell Rotella T. In my 'hood though most all of the diesel truck oil only comes in the thick stuff now. No more light 10W-30 unless you want the synthetic oil wihich I don't use. Maybe the truckers don't buy the lighter weight? I got my stash now. I heard that there may be a new feature here on the DB. Supposed to be nice icon at top of page on Corvette oil. Yeah you will just be able to click on it and get a shot of reading well over 1000 posts.
Seriously it was only about 3 weeks before we were going to start the engine in my 63 car when I learned from Bill Clupper and Duke about the C1-4 crap. Also learned about the EOS from GM. Now available again for big bucks under # 88862586. Learning the info at the 11th hour paid off as I have had no problems with the 63 flat tappet engine. Good luck, JD

I buy (C-category) oil on price and use it in all my vehicles (including a 1983 Honda CB1100F superbike), which date from 1963 to 1991. Back in April Mobil had a three dollar rebate deal on CJ-4 Delvac gallons, which were priced at $9.12 at Walmart. (I'm still waiting for the $12 check for the four gallons I purchased.)

Prior to that I bought a few quarts of Walmart's SuperTech house brand, which was CI-4 and priced at a buck and a half a quart.

A couple of weeks ago I needed a little top off oil, and rather than breaking into a new Delvac gallon I walked down to my local Pep Boys and bought a quart of their Proline house brand CI-4 for a little over two bucks.

All of these purchases were of the 15W-40 viscosity range, which is suitable for year round use in Southern California.

Want ZDDP in oil? Check www.mossmotors.com as they sell it. I always knew having that Triumph Spitfire would come in handy one day.
