    Restore magazine

I'm missing the Summer 1989 issue (Vol. 16 #1) of the Corvette Restorer. I moved that year so I just figured it got lost with the address change. I've been searching E-Bay for quite awhile and have never seen one. There have been several collections for sale but they too are all missing that very same issue. Was that issue skipped for some reason?

    Jim:

Just went to my Corvette REstorer CD and there is a note there that says there "was no volumn 16, #1. The NCRS spec guide was published in place of this issue." Your search is over!

      Jim:

There is no Year 1989 Issue #16-1. The NCRS Specifications Book was published instead.

Thanks Steve and Larry. That will save what little left I have of my sanity. Searching for something that doesn't exist can drive one crazy. Now I can concentrate on finding a Sasquatch.

If you want to have a complete collection of the Restorer, you need to have an original issue "Membership Edition" of the NCRS Specifications Guide. The show up occasionally on ebay.

If you check closely on the inside cover, you will see that the membership version of the specs guide actually is Volume 16 #1 of the Restorer. Many members have spent time searching for the 'missing issue' only to discover they already have it.......

Arland, in addition to the large 8 1/2 x 11 book didn't NCRS send out a small spiral bound pocket version to all members or did I just come up with that somewhere? Gary....

Gary, That was not the case (little spiral Spec Guide was not sent out to membership)...

Arland (& Mike Ernst) are correct. Restorer 16/1 does exist and it IS the full size Spec Guide. Plain and simple. The real original takes some knowledge to identify.

When you stop and think about it, given the time frame of knowledge, that issue was pretty incredible. John Amgwert spent so much time to put that together. Today, we tend to take the info for granted. Not so when it was first sent out.

President Bill Clupper's message in that issue explained quite a bit about that issue.

As mentioned in the 25th Anniversary Restorer, 16/1 looked different than any previous Restorer, and many members took it to their shop to use on their restoration, with coffee stains, grease, dirt and notes to be added. It was a "working copy" of the Restorer. That is probably why so many can't "find" that issue. And, a really good one it was - and is. Dennis

I have to disagree. I was sent 2 spiral bound pocket guides, 53-67 and 68-82. I know for sure that I never bought them so they had to have been sent to all members for free.

                      Re: Restore magazine

This is waaay too much information on spec guides but the sequence of events went something like this:

1989 original 8 1/2 x 11 bound version of the 53-72 specs guide was sent to the membership as Volume 16 #1 of the Restorer.

Once the extra bound issues had been sold through the NCRS store a new version of left side spiral bound full sized issues were printed.

Once the spiral bound full sized issues were sold out, a small pocket sized version for 53-72 was created as described in a 1994 issue of the Driveline 'If you liked our big Spec Guide, you'll love our pocket version'. These were 4" x 6" and spiral bound on the top.

The next version of the pocket sized 53-67 spec guide was copyright dated 1997 and was bound on the left like a small book. 1997 was also the time that the new 68-82 soft bound pocket sized edition was announced.

The fourth edition pocket sized version of the 68-82 spec guide was copyright dated 2004 and was spiral bound on the left side.

How and when different members came into possesion of the various incarnations of the specs guides is open to anyone's interpretation.

Could the board have approved sending the pocket guides to members for a membership sign-up promotion? If I recall we often coupled two, three and possibly five year sign up plans with a give away such as that or a tee shirt as an incentive for multiple year dues extensions.

I agree with Vinnie; I seem to recall when a Member would renew for two or more years, the Pocket Guide was sent as a "premium".

                            Vinnie,

Multiple year membership renewal is how at least one pocket guide became a part of the collection at this end.
