    C1 steering box adjustment Q

is it typical when the steerring box play is adjusted to a minimum in centered position ,

that when you turn to left or right the play increases the more you turn left or right ?

Yes, that's the way it is on my '56 and '57

Yes, nature of the beast. The worm and sector roller arrangement was used before on passenger cars too. If you get too much play, you can rebuild the box with new parts, but expensive. They are available through the usual suspects.

I rebuilt mine about 20 years ago with "better" used parts. Still the same after all those years. A little play both ways off center.

          Sander,

That's the way it is on my 1960 also. It's smooth and no play in the center, but a few inches of play on the far left and right. But the only time lack of play is important is when you are driving straight or making normal turns. The only time you turn the wheel to the far left or right is when you are doing a U-turn or something and, since you are applying pressure when turning, you don't feel it there anyway. If you adjust the left and right play out, your steering in the middle will be lumpy and stiff. If you end up with your steering wheel a bit off after playing with the box, just loosen the clamps on the small steering "tie-rod" and adjust.

People some times over look the drag-link adjustment or wear and think the steering box causes the problem. It can cause play in the wheel or wobble if you hit a bump .Simple to check and adjust it first.
