    56 Gearbox

    Hi,

    Just removed the engine from my 56 for a rebuild, the 3 speed Saginaw gearbox looks like it may be original. What should the casting number on the tail housing be so I can check?

    Thanks,
    Paul.

        Paul;

        Does that gear box use a long tail shaft or is it short like some passenger units?

        Just curious.

          Paul, it the tailshaft non-vented? Any cast date? Should also have to half moon vertical cut outs on the sides of the rear shaft seal. Gary....

            Main Housing 3845122
            Tailshaft 3722946

            In my opinion the tailshaft is long, but I'm no expert. Found my numbers book and they all seem to match although it does list another tailshaft of 3722848.

            Does appear to be non-vented and have the cut outs.

              Paul, lucky you the 946 tailshaft is a real hard to find part. It's '56 & possibly early '57. Haven't seen any for sale in quiet a while. '56 side cover should be a 3845157, dated 55 or 56 and the lever bolt grooves should be on top which allows the shifter levers to point up. Paul Hendricksen and Stan Edmunds years ago wrote some good Restorer articles about tranmissions. Believe they are on the 56-7 CD-ROM available from the NCRS Store. Gary....

                Thanks Gary,

                Will look the articles up, apart from a few oil leaks it appears fine. Whines a bit when you change down from 3rd to 2nd but I guess that's just a characteristic.

                Paul.
