    Hi Greg,
The paint cost while $$$ is low compared to cost of actually getting the body ready to paint. Just how much did you pay yourself ? I foolishly thought I'd get paid even when doing the same thing over 3 or 4 times. Ha, Ha. It's all fun!
    Regards,
    Alan

PS: Finally having color on the body is a wonderful thing!

Awe that's a beautiful pic Alan! Watch that left leg of yours!

I do have my reservations about taking this on myself because 1, it's silver which is metalic and 2, it's silver which is metalic...no that's not a typo. I assume yours is metalic too because it looks bronze?

I think I'll do okay in the end and like you say I could do it several times over and still be WAY ahead of what they want to just paint a car here in Calgary. I got quotes from 7k to 15k to JUST paint it, prep and body work is extra all though the one for 15k would go over it to make sure there were no waves and it was nice and smooth. 15k to wreck a Corvette body?...I could do it for less than that!

Tracy that's good advice on mixing all the paint together and I'll do that.

Back in the Ice Age (1980 - San Mateo)

for a Red/Red 1962 with two tops, I bought 3 gallons; mixed them ALL together in a 5 gallon bucket; at the paint shop, I had them take enough for 3 spray cans before delivery and had 1/2 gallon unthinned paint left.
The spray cans came in handy - drove the car from Phoenix to San Mateo and en route took an aluminum can in the lower front valence; sanded; patched; sanded; primed; painted and then rehearsed the story about the lack of good factory paint coverage in that area. Passed...without comment....one of 12 cars to get a Top Flight out of the 52 cars entered. The forms were certainly not as detailed as they are today, but there were other offsets - I had 4 "Nonqualifying" tires on the car but an original spare - scored ZERO.
Hate to just be an old guy, but i believe Bryan Futo may have said it best:

"Be glad you were a part of it when we still gave a s__t
about the car.". (Somehow it hurts everytime that I
          have to agree.).

            Hi Greg,
That's not me... I only dream about painting as well as he does. He's been running a 1 man shop ( all Chevrolets, mostly Corvettes ) for 35 years. He has never painted anything but LACQUER !!!!
The paint is Mille Miglia Red, it's the afternoon sun giving it that hue. It was sanded after the first 2 coats.
When I saw it the next morning I thought it had been sanded and rubbed but it hadn't. This man knows how to paint!!!
I was so lucky to find him.
            Regards,
            Alan

Just for info, I used these grits: 1000 for the rougher spots, 1200, 1500, and finally 2000. Then switch to 3m compound followed by 3m finesse it II. Kevin Tetz's video on cut/polishing was well worth the $$ for a newbie like me.
              Mike,
Where did you get Kevin Tetz" video that you referenced in the thread?

                Kevin Tetz Instructionals

He's got a series of tapes/DVDs called "Paint-U-Cation" that include the whole process from bodywork through final detailing. I just painted my first car, and Kevin's tutorials are full of valuable tips.

OK where to get them. Eastwoods carries them for one, but Ebay usually has some if not all of the titles. I'd check there first.

When you see Kevin, you might recognize him as the co-host of a current TV show. He has, however, ditched the mullet hairdo!

I shot my '65 in 1980 in Milano Maroon lacquer. Still looks good. One piece of advice I remember from that time was to keep the paint thin. I believe that was to reduce the cracking that can occur with thick lacquer. The original paint on my Ermine White '59 cracked in the area where the paint tended to puddle. (I don't remember how much paint I used for the '65.)

Thanks for the $ info on Ermine White lacquer. I still have to re-paint the '59!
