      Thanks for adding your "voice of experience" to this matter. I have brought it up on a number of other threads regarding tire sizes, and for the most part have been ignored or written down as being too cautious. I took my lead from an experienced Corvette mechanic when I went to radials - that, and from the horrer stories I had heard or read about, chose to go with his sizing advice and I'm happy I did. Also, he advised that I must re-align both the front and rear for the radials. As it was, he said he was able to get mine into adjustment but the rear required full out adjustment in order to meet specs. I suspect many C-2 owners are not having theirs aligned properly and are, therefore, not realizing the full potential of their new tires.

      What alignment specifications did he recommend, and what adjustment required "full out". Alignment specs have been discussed many times in the archives and details given for both "touring" and "performance" settings. Radial tires should have less toe-in than bias ply tires.

      If you want a dynamic performance envelope that will pull your socks off, Avon offers a V-rated 215/70R-15 DOT legal racing tire that, with the performance alignment specs, hard bushings in the front anti-roll bar links and a set of adjustable shocks like Spax or QA-1 will bring lateral acceleration. and braking up to the 1+g range - without dump truck stiff aftermarket springs, and you'll have a C2 that is a match for nearly any modern sports car or sedan with better than OE ride quality due to the better damping that you dial in to your specific preference.

        Yea, and then some kid is gunna come along in a new C6 that daddy bought and make that old C2 look like it's on four flat tires.
        And he'll do it with the A/C on while talking on his cell phone.

          Michael;

          One thing wrong with that analogy; true most kids don't have much sense with regards to their own mortality, but they also don't have the cahones (sp) for rat racing. The first mistake they make, and the C-6 forgives them for, they will shut down. Then too, his daddy will come along and want to trade ya!

          Duke; got some family obligations today, and I've been out already with my son flying our flags (mine from the Antenna mast, his a clip on with his 78 P.C.), but I have a print out with the specs for my alignment that I'll look for and get to you some how. your AVON tire sounds great. Have to check into those.

            When out cruising in my 66 425 HP car and some kid pulls up next to me at a stop light revving the engine in his new C6, I always pull away slowly and avoid the challenge. (for several valid and logical reasons)
            Mostly, though, because I don't to be embarrased.
            Same is true when following a C6, or for that matter, anything newer than a C3, through a curve on a back road.
            You could spend $50,000 on a C2 and still not make it handle as well as a new C6.
            Lemme tell ya a little story. The last time I raced at Road America, it was in a full on race 63 corvette conv that had been an SCCA race car since new. Had ALL the tricks and a current "today" 355" motor that made serious horsepower. The car weighed in at around 2700 lbs., or less.
            Best time at RA was 2:37. Now remember, this is a full competition car.
            Today, you can go right to your Chevrolet dealer and buy a C6 Corvette that will run that fast, and FASTER, with the A/C on!

            A reasonably stock C2 Corvette with some suspension mod's and good tires MAY break into the "under 3:00 range at that track, but I doubt it.

              Hi Michael:

              Our autocross group has a kid running DOT race tires (on a C3) who beats all the old guys running DOT race tires on C4, C5, and C6. So are you saying the C2 is slower, or Stu? I resemble that remark!

                I think Autocross is a little different than racing on a full road course. Lot of driver influence on the results there too.

                Don't get me wrong, I love my 66 and will defend to the death it's ability to do amazing things but, tangling with the tech of new Corvettes is not a logical decision.
                I've owned a C4 and even though it's a lot less car than a C6, it's still light years ahead of the old car as far as performance.
                I just don't think I'd be making a logical decision if I decided to make suspension improvements/modifications on my car to compete with a new C6. I definitely wouldn't want solid bushings in any suspension components.

                That's like spending a lot of money on an old AM radio hoping it will sound as good as a new Stereo system.

                  Michael;

                  To be honest, I don't like to mix it up within the family. I'd rather just wave. Besides, stop light matches are not my bag. Having a close ratio and 3.36 I would be embarassed when mine would fall flat in a big bog off the line. I would rather pick on commandos with Mustangs and little Porsches on a roll.

                  I miss the good times at Road America. Back in the early 60's, I went up there regularly with a buddy who had his SCCA ticket. Parked my 63 in the Corvette coral once. That was cool - the beer and brats weren't bad either.

                  Happy Fourth!

                    Thanks Stu... I hope you, and everyone else here, has a great 4th too.

                    I miss those days at RA too. I loved racing on that track! Still have movies that were made from inside my car. Fun to watch and remember. In fact, I had a small chunk of one converted to digital and it's now on youtube.

                    Was just on my way out the door to go shopping and brats are on the list.

                      When the kid has 30 years of track experence he might stand a chance. He'd feel even worse if I blew him off in the Cosworth Vega. There are a lot of name brand sports car owners who met that fate at Willow Springs and Riverside, and those are both known as power tracks. Even the most capable cars require a driver with a modicum of driving skills in anything other than a simple stop light drag race.

                      I think it was Paul Newman who said "old age and treachery will always win over youth and exuberance" when he was racing in IMSA at about age 70.

                        Duke,

                        With all due respect for Hud, "Fast" Eddie Felson, "Cool Hand" Luke, et.al., it was Clint Eastwood who once said:

                        "A man's gotta know his limitations".

                          Tell Kyle Busch he needs more of that "sperience" yer talkin about.

                          I know kids in go karts that are faster than most C2/C3 Corvettes at most road courses.
