    1966 steel wheels

I'm looking at a set of 1966 steel wheels that is for sale how can I tell if thay are original wheels or service replacement.
On the wheel with the tire removed it has stamped 15 x 5 1/2 JK 66 GM stamped next to the lug hole.
    Thanks Tony

Tony I assume you mean the stamping is near the valve core hole rather than a lug hole. There should also be a couple of stampings adjacent to this stamp grouping indicating a mfg date. Could range from 8 64 to 7 66 and be original issue wheels.

I wouldn't get to wrapped up about it though, The early service wheels are identical in configuration and you won't be able to tell with a tire mounted.

Just remember that if the wheels have lugs that would secure a dog dish hubcap...they ain't what your're looking for.

      Tony,

They sure seem correct based on size and date (66) but I don't know about the "GM" stamp . I enclosed a picture of one of mine for comparison.

!Another give-away would be the drips and runs on the front of the face of the wheel . They were originally dipped and hung to dry.

      Hope this helps.

        Tom,

The original Kelsey Hayes steel wheels also had a date code stamped inside. For ex., my car is a Dec. 65 build date and my wheels were stamped NOV 65. Even if they are correct service replacements the wheels are not judged for build date since the stamp is on the inside.

I have radials mounted on a set of service replacement wheels for driving. My bias ply are mounted on my original wheels.
