    67 Front and Rear Shock Replacement - NCRS "Correct"

    Can someone direct me to the best service replacement shocks for my 67. I remember reading about some AC Delco shocks that people bought, painted gray, and put decals on, maybe even engraved numbers?

    1. Please let me know what the part number for both front and rear shocks would be. Again, I'm going for the best NCRS correct style available. Where can I get them - Auto Zone?

    2. Do I need anything to correctly marry these replacement shocks to my 67? Rubber bushings (if that is correct word)?

    3. What color paint to use and where to get it.

    4. What decals are suppose to be there (probably in the JG).

    5. Finally, how much of a pain is it to replace the shocks?

    Thanks.

    1) Once-upon-a-time there were GM/Delco shocks available which were virtually identical to the originals except for "numbers" and "dates". However, the last of these were discontinued about 10 years ago. There still are GM/Delco shocks available, although they are actually manufactured by Gabriel or Monroe. They are configured somewhat differently from the originals but they're still about the closest you can get to the originals. Delco numbers are 530-315 (GM #88947653) and 530-4 (GM #88945172);

    2) These shocks are supplied with all necessary hardware and bushings. Reuse you front upper retainer and rear lower retainer (assuming they're original pieces);

    3) I don't think there was a "precise" color used consistently for these shocks. However, I like the gray-blue shock paint supplied by Quanta;

    4) No decals were ever applied to the original shocks. However, small broadcast code labels were used. I believe that Paragon supplies these;

    5) Shocks are pretty easy to replace if you have any mechanical ability, at all.

    MUCH more about shocks in the archives.

      Kirk and Joe,

      I think I got my spay paint from Quanta for the shocks.Maybe CC. However if you have access to Semour paint in rattle cans ,it is called "gloss dark gray" and is numbered 16-117.

          If you are looking for guaranteed NCRS correct shocks which include part numbers and date codes contact Dan Patch. He is the only one I know of who does these to NCRS standards. You will not be disappointed. They will be expensive compared to the current store bought types but what we pay for parts for these cars currently whats a few extra C notes added to the bill. You can find him on ebay under Corvette shocks. Look for the one who price is around $850. Contact him and tell him what you need. I highly recommend him.

          Cheers,
          Craig

              Hey Guys,

              What about these on fleabay:

              Can old shocks like these be reconditioned to work like new? Also, I've noticed John Messinger selling some F-41 rear shocks - what about those? Thanks.

                These are USED shocks. The other eBay shock source for restamped shocks may or may not be used shocks; I don't know.

                My advice: if one is creating a "trailer queen" type car primarily for judging purposes and wants to maximize every single point, then used shocks are fine. For this purpose, configuration is all-important and functionality is relatively unimportant (just enough functionality to get it on and off the trailer and, possibly, through a PV).

                However, if one intends to DRIVE a car, then I would not install any USED shocks. This includes a situation in which one does want to have the car judged but also wants to drive it.

                  Joe,
                  Well stated, especially the last paragraph.

                    She's definitely a driver, so I ordered the new GM replacements today. Will have to fix them up the best I can. Thanks.
