    67' Wiring Problem, New Restoration

    Hello everyone,
    I am finishing up my own (and first) complete restoration of a 67' 435 horse car. I just recently had the guts to hook up a battery and to my surprise ALMOST everything worked. I have replaced all the wiring with exception of the rear harness (it seems ok) with Lectric Limited replacement wiring. My problems;
    A.) When I connected a battery (with jumper cables) the 4 rear tail lights went on without any switches on . I disconnected the headlamp switch CONNECTION and the lights remained on? The only way that they would go off was to disconnect the rear harness at the dash area. WHAT IS WRONG???

    B.) When I finally had the nerve to try the starter I tried turning it over and shortly I noticed that the jumper cables were melted? The car wiring was not hot or damaged. The battery cables were attached correctly and so was the jumper cables. I hooked up a new set of cables and everything is ok and no heat buildup to the cables but DID NOT try to engage the starter until I find out as to what is going on. HELP!!!

    MUCH THANKS, JERRY

    Probably the brake lights that are on, not he tail lamps. A jumper cable is not really capable of carring enough current to start the car. Install a battery.

      Brake lights are my thought too. The switch is probably out of adjustment.

        Did the engine turn over? I've never heard of a dead short in a starter; that might do it if the battery cables are much larger than the jumper cables.

        But if the battery cables weren't hot when the jumpers melted, all I can think of is that the jumper cables shorted out on the battery hold-down?

          I think he hooked up the battery through jumper cables. The battery was not in the car. Thats what I got out ot the description. Cables dont handle that too well.
