    Save the Wave

Back in 1970/1971 when I had my second vette (previously a 1956), going to college in Bloomington/Normal, IL if you passed another vette owner you gave an easy across the dash wave with your right hand. Is this still done? I now live in South Texas and don't see it. Maybe it was just a central Illinois thing. Let me know if this is still a tradition.

Yous'ed to see it all the time. Had my 58 in 69-74, goin to college as well. In fact ALL sports Cars used to wave at each other. Now don't see that many on the road. But when I drive my 67 now. I find waves from P.U trucks to Audis go figure.

      Jay,

Me too; even bikers give me a thumbs-up. But a lot of the late model Vette owners don't wave or even look your way...envy, snobbery or ignorance---but it's a free country, I guess.

I acknowledge any make of classic car/hot rod/antique--they're all part of the hobby!

I get the peace wave ( two finger ) from the left hand on the wheel.
Don't see to many vett owners coming out to the show and shines either.
Must be waxing or dusting. Sad

I was out yesterday afternoon for about 45 min. in my 74 and had passed 2 other vettes and got the 'wave' from both. First one was a C-1 and the other was a C-4.

            Re: Save the Wave

I always wave, but I use my left hand as my right is usually too busy shiftin and steerin. Most Vette owners return the wave, save for a few newbies in C-5, and 6,s. I've been doing it now since mine was new -1963 with good results. I usually initiate it and if I don't get a response, my five finger salute some how changes into a "digitis impedicus" all by itself. Can't control it. It's automatic. Guess It don't like bein made to feel foolish, like "What the heck! Does that guy think he knows me or sumpin?"

              John and All,

It's a mixed bag. During the 70's I used to always get waves from solid axle and Stingrays (except from the young punks that didn't know that a '62 was really a Corvette). Even now, I wave to any oncoming Corvette, but rarely get one back from the C5 and C6's.

I am sure that someone has more detailed info, but I thought it started with the editor of Corvette News suggesting owners (via the magazine) to wave to each other when passing like the foreign cars did.

BTW - was your '62 a bright kelly green with heavy gold flakes (totally stock color)? If so I may have seen you tooling around in Illinois back then.

Back in early 70 when I had my first 62 it was a metalflake gold (Lou Beaudreau's old car-announced for the Cubs). I painted it a a dark corvette emerald green. Had both tops and drove from Streator to Bloomington quite often while attending school. Sold in 71 befre I got married. Wife couldn't drive a stick and didn't have the patience to teach her.

I hadn't drove my '62 in about 19yrs. Had her out last Sunday and met a C6. He waved! It so far has been the only Corvette I have seen while behind the wheel.

                    John F.;

Hope you're not a Cubs fan too. After what they did to my Sox these last few days, ouch! I'm a displaced Chicagan myself. Lived in Hinsdale over 26 years before retiring to sunny Florida (Go Rays!).

                    Here's Wavin at ya!

Die hard Sox fans are like old vettes, we never go away. Always a South-sider. We'll get at Comiskey or whatever they call it now.

At least the Rays took care of the Cubs before the Sox faced them. It was a long weekend for me as well with all my relatives calling to razz me about what happened at that minor league sized field (way too many HRs).

Hey they get to do it again this weekend at New Comisky (I can't call it "Cellullar Field").

                        Hey, Save the Wave!

The article from Corvette News, that I remember, was titled " Save the Wave". That must have been about 30 years ago, so this is nothing new. I think the number of four lane or more divided highways is as much the cause as anything else. I usually get a wave when we meet face to face on a two lane.

I wave all the time, but the C5-C6 people just don't get it. Sometimes I will get a response from the C5-C6 group, but it's usually a female! I started doing "the wave" back in 1961, when you always got "the wave". I guess back then it was unusual to see another Corvette, but now they are as common as hens teeth.

It's so funny when driving my 06 I get a lot of waves from other newer Corvette guys, but driving my 55 few waves from newer Corvette guys but all the time from just other people going by pacing me to look use over ,a honk , following me for a while , even hanging out taking pic's. Cant even get gas with out most people asking what I'm driving. Women mostly saying it's so cute not knowing or asking what it is.
More people start a conversation with me over the 55 then any other Corvette we ever owned.
