    65 Coupe headlight bezel Screws

    Hello All,
I am trying to find out the configuration of the upper and lower headlight bezel retaining screws on my 65 coupe. The judging guide says the uppers are Chrome plated Flathead phillps screws and the lower are black oxide flat head phillips screws. I belive that these are really oval head? Also the top screws are sheet metal screw that screw into a j nut. But the bottom screws I belive are 8/32 machine screws that screw directly into the headlight bucket. THe judging guide does not specify sheet metal vs machine screw. The part number for the lower screws is 9420683. I found this in the AIM. Can anyone tell me the proper configuration, ( finish, head type and sheet metal vs machine screw) of these screws? I think I need a black oxide, oval head, phillips bit, 8/32 machine screw about 3/4-1 inch long. I have not been able to locate a screw like this at the hardware store. So this makes me wander if I am looking for the correct screw.
    Thanks in advance,
    Bill Holder

Bill: You're correct about the uppers being sheet metal screws and the bottoms being (self-tapping) machine screws. Both are in fact flat or "bugle" head to keep them as flush as possible. The self-tapping screws are the same ones that attach the pivots to the bucket. LICS sells a bezel screw kit, all bright plated.

If GM did use black oxide screws here to be less obtrusive, I would have to wonder why they didn't also use them on the rocker covers instead of chrome which sticks out like a sore thumb.

Thanks Mike, Would anyone with original headlight buckets like to chime in about the finish? Or maybe Joe Lucia would know the original specs on the screws?
      Thanks again

Uppers were chrome, lowers were Black, but, I believe Black phos like the rocker moldings rather than Black Oxide.

I cant say whether black phosphate or oxide but the lowers were blackish.
