Question for Joe Lucia: C2 Drive Shaft Part Number

    Joe:

I have been trying to identify the correct part number that was stenciled on the drive shaft of my '64 327/300 engine. The '64 AIM calls this part the "Prop shaft Assembly" (complete with U-joints and trans. yoke) an gives it the part number of 3843002. Is this correct or is there another number for the shaft alone? Also, was the number stenciled in yellow or while paint? I've seen both.

Several guys have provided help on this question, but each offers a different number.

    thanks

I've never seen an original midyear driveshaft with a part number stenciled on it.

The part number for the driveshaft without u-joints was GM #3830618. This is the only way the driveshaft was available in SERVICE. However, the shaft, itself was the same as that used for the PRODUCTION assembly which, of course, had a different assembly part number.

As far as stenciled-on part numbers, I don't know. I don't know why it would have been necessary for 63-67 Corvettes----there was only one driveshaft assembly in the plant since ALL Corvettes in this period used the same one. So, there was absolutely no need for assemblers to distinguish between one or the other. However, the same was true for fuel tanks and some of those did have part numbers stenciled on them.

For 1968-69, there might have been a need for stenciled-on part numbers since there were 2 different assemblies used depending upon transmission. Still, my 1969 never had any part number stenciled on the driveshaft.

Thanks for your responses...... really appreciate it!

The new '63-'64 Technical Judging Guide covers this matter of drive shaft stencils on page#146. The Guide states, "Original drive shafts have a stenciled part number." I've seen drive shafts with and with-out the stencil; some in white and some in yellow painted numbers. Since my engine and trans are out of the car for some work, I thought this would be a good time to "do" the drive shaft "by the book".

Any thoughts on the appropriate color for stencil?

Actually, a stencil part number on a 63-64 shaft shouldn't be an issue to begin with. For those two years, the shaft was covered in chassis black.
