I know this sounds stupid (and I did check the archives) but I just purchased a replacement coil for my car from M&H Fabricators (the guys that make the Breakerless SE unit). The coil is oil filled but is it normal to be able to hear the oil sloshing around inside the coil if I move it around? TIA.

Re: Coil question
I have a couple of old MAGSPARK coils made by Mallory years ago and some square off brand 40,000 Volt units that I once got from J.C. Whitney that were oil filled, and you could shake them to hear the oil slosh around inside. So, I guess it is/was common. I know these units will still work today, I just don't have an application for them anymore.

Re: Coil question
Michael;
Just as a point of clarification; The Magspark was actually called a transformer, but connected and performed the same function as any coil. The mounting bracket also had a place to attach the ballast resistor which made connecting even easier. You see, some of us on the TDB are old hot rodders too which brings a touch of "non-originality" to the discussion, Ha!

Re: Coil question
Stuart, I don't consider myself a hot rodder but complete originality is not my thing either (only because I enjoy driving my car and to bring it up to Top Flight status would put me upside down financially and then I may have some trepidation about driving it) although I won't put on fender flares or do those types of things to the car. I do believe though that the TDB has the most knowledgable individuals on Corvettes anywhere around whether or not it relates to the originality or correctness of parts or to pure mechanical type issues with these vehicles.- Top
