    58-62 Emblem

    Hi all,

I have some questions on the 58-62 nose/trunk plastic emblems. When I got my 1960, it had the original gold emblem on the trunk and a replacement silver one on the nose. The central portion with the lettering, V, and cross flags is very thick, maybe 5/16", on both emblems.

A couple of years ago, I bought a pair of the ones shown as NOS in the recent Restorer article and they are on my car. However, there is a thickness difference between this pair and my original and other clearly aged (faded, scuffed and cracked) originals I have seen. Originals have a central thickness of about 5/16". The central thickness of the "NOS" pair I have is much thinner at maybe 3/16". I have also seen what appears to be brand new silver emblems that also have the thin central portion. I have not seen any thin emblems, silver or gold, that did not appear brand new.

I have been told that (1) my "NOS" pair is a reproduction pair from 20 years ago that was "unauthorized," (2) my "NOS" pair is part of a box of original emblems that Chevrolet sent to a potential alternate supplier who never came through and (3) my "NOS" pair used to be silver and someone is taking silver emblems, removing the color and redoing them in gold.

So, what is the scoop on my "NOS" pair? If they are originals, then why the thickness difference between them and what I see on known original emblems? And, if the thin emblem is really 50 years old, why do I not see any obviously old ones? (Has anyone?) And just where did my "NOS" pair come from??

    Re: 58-62 Emblem

The thinner ones are the GM replacement emblems that they were already selling in 1974 when I bought my first 62. That was what they sold for many, many years. Why they changed the thickness, someone else may know.

Forgot to mention--those that are in GM boxes should be described teachnically as NORS. New Old REPLACEMENT Stock, because they are not as the originals in thickness.

Mike, Were the NORS emblems gold or silver? Thanks, Bob.

All I ever saw where silver. Somebody must have copied this incorrect emblem.

            Re: 58-62 Trunk/Nose Gold/Silver Thin/Thick Emblems

So, if the thin silver emblems were a 1974 service replacement, then when were the thick silver ones made? They must be pretty early because the thick silver one was on my car and all the old and used silver ones I see are thick. Has anyone seen the thin silver that looks like it has been on a car for 34 years? - Bob
