    1972 Delco-Remy B-R 270 Coil Question

I am fairly certain that the DR B-R 270 coil in my 1972 350/200 is the original. A couple of questions:

    1. JG does not specify any markings to show date codes, etc. How could the year of manufacture be verified to ensure that mine is a 1972 original?

    2. Does anyone know if those coils were oil filled or filled with some other liquid?

    Thanks in advance.

Roger, there is a Delco- Remy logo on the top of coil.No Date code is on the coil. Only the BR-270 embossed on the coil cover. No way to tell if the coil was original to that car. Coils are oil filled.

Thank you Bob! That is everything I needed to know. There is a crack near one of the terminals on mine (I think a previous owner may have tightened the connection down too far). I suspect that it is all the way thru. I will double check it tomorrow.

Check you private messages. I sent you one earlier today.

        Rog,

I just looked at it after sitting a couple of days, and it is definitely seeping oil through the crack. On to the next question. I have what I believe is an original coil from my 69 (uninstalled, in a box of parts provided by the previous owner) and in good shape. Rogers 72 coil has a number 26 in tiny font on the top next to one of the terminals. My 69 coil has the letters BY in tiny font next to one of the terminals. Otherwise they are identical. Do those numbers and letters mean anything if not date codes.

I believe the emboss marks in the Bakelite designate the specifics of Delco Remy production source (what mold, what plant, what line). To my knowledge that aspect of the coil isn't judged...

Well original to the car or not I can't have a "seeping" coil. Guess I'll have to replace it.

I don't want to sound like an alarmist, but there is probably some real nasty stuff in the "oil" that is seeping out. If you clean it up with anything -- put the rags or paper towels with your hazardous waste. And don't smoke or eat without washing your hands thoroughly. That "oil" probably contains PCBs. I can't spell the full words, but that is enough that Google will tell you more.

I'd use that 69 coil. Those small letters are not known as yet. IE;not judged. I would hold onto the cracked one as originals are hard to come by and maybe the crack can be fixed/ cemented etc.

Thanks Terry for the warning. Good catch!

Bob, I saw one on e-Bay a while ago in really bad shape and the guy wanted $345 for it. Hard to believe. Perhaps I'll run across a fix for it somewhere. We'll see.
