    69 Exhaust

    I have a 69 427 with incorrect side exhaust. The fiberglass insulation is broken and there other issues with the side exhaust.

    I'm going to replace it with the correct exhaust system. I see there are aluminum and stainless steel and welded and non-welded. What is correct and what is the point deduct if I go with the least cost aluminum non-welded.

    There are no aluminum exhaust systems. I think what you mean is ALUMINIZED STEEL. Basically, there are 3 types of pipes----natural mild steel, aluminized steel, and stainless steel. Natural mild steel is what was originally used, but it rusts quickly. At a minimum, I would use aluminized steel to avoid this problem. Actually, I always prefer stainless but for judging that's going to be a big hit.

    The original systems used pipes welded at the muffler---there was no forward extension on the mufflers with a slip joint. So, if you want to be closer to original, you need the systems in which the rear pipe is supplied complete with the muffler.

    One other thing to be sure of if originality is a concern: ALL 1969 Corvettes used 2" exhaust systems. Base engine to ZL-1.
